Illegal alien accused of assaulting girl

TRAVERSE CITY -- Police arrested an illegal alien for an alleged sexual assault of a 6-year-old girl after he allegedly was caught in the act by the child's mother.

Traverse City Police Capt. Steve Morgan said the mother had a gathering in her apartment on Bay Hill Drive and the suspect, 23, came with a neighbor to the gathering. Shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday, the mother noticed the man was missing and found him in her daughter's bedroom.

The man fled the apartment and police were called. Police picked up the suspect near Division and 14th streets. Morgan said the suspect admitted to the crime and acknowledged he was in the country illegally.

The suspect was jailed on suspicion of felony criminal sexual conduct.
