Editor's note: Northern Michigan voters will head to the polls Aug. 5 to choose among candidates for local, state and national office, as well as decide numerous local tax measures.
The primary election determines the major parties' candidates for the November general election. Hundreds of candidates are seeking posts throughout northern Michigan, many of whom are in contested races.
Today's Record-Eagle lists all public office races in the region, as well as local millage requests.

ANTRIM COUNTY
The sole contested county race on the all-Republican ballot is that of sheriff. Incumbent Terry Johnson faces challengers Daniel Bean and Rocky Windish. Prosecutor Charles Koop, Clerk Laura Sexton, Treasurer Sherry Comben, Register of Deeds Patty Niepoth and Drain Commissioner Mark Stone all are seeking four more years in their offices. Newcomer Scott Papineau is the sole candidate for surveyor.
County commissioners Jerroll Drenth, Eugene Dawson, Larry Bargy, Jack White, David Howelman, Michael Crawford, Laura Stanek, Bernie Blackmore and Joseph Allen are running unopposed to keep their two-year terms. Also, county voters will be asked to renew a four-year, 6.67-mill levy to be distributed among Antrim County, individual townships and the intermediate school districts.
In the 105th District state House race Republican incumbent Kevin Elsenheimer and Democratic challenger Connie Saltonstall are unopposed.
There are no contested races on the all-Republican ballot in Banks Township. Supervisor Thomas Mann, Clerk Donna Heeres, Treasurer Katherine Postmus and trustees Mark DeKorne and Marvin Rubingh are running unopposed to retain their four-year seats. Voters also will be asked to approve a two-year, 1-mill levy for road work.
In Central Lake Township, Republican Supervisor Stanley Bean is running unopposed for the four-year seat, as is Republican Treasurer Heather Eckhardt. No incumbents are running for the four-year clerk position. The Republican candidates include Mary Ellen Hart, Debra Hobohm and Ginger Kwiek. Incumbent trustees William Gadwau and William Murray, both Republicans, are running with Republican challengers Mark Byard and Mary Lou Detar and Democratic challenger Twala Wolfe for two, four-year terms.
Chestonia Township Supervisor Robert Beckner, a Republican, is vying with Republican challenger Roy Wicht for the four-year post. Clerk Twilla Coon and Treasurer Jacqueline Bates, both Republicans, are running unopposed for their four-year seats. Incumbent trustee Donald Meyers is running with newcomer Timothy Utter, both Republicans, for two, four-year terms. Voters also will be asked to renew a 2-mill levy for fire protection services through 2011.
There are no contested races in Custer Township. Republican Supervisor Robert Ricksgers, Democratic Clerk Stacy Simon, Republican Treasurer Renee Elder, Democratic Trustee Jerry Allen and Republican Trustee Roxann Flake are seeking four more years in their posts. Voters also will be asked to renew a 1.5-mill levy for garbage collection through 2011.
In Echo Township, Supervisor William Derenzy is running unopposed to retain the four-year seat, as are Democratic Trustee Dennis Graham and Republican Trustee Lee Folsom. Republican Clerk Evelyn Hull is vying to keep the four-year office from Democratic challenger Julia Kelly, and Treasurer Alan Petrie will face challenger Pamela Hebden, both Democrats, for the four-year post.
Elk Rapids Township Supervisor William White, Clerk Carolyn Boals and Treasurer Michael Szymanski, all Republicans, are running unopposed to retain their four-year seats. Incumbent Trustee Dorance Amos, a Republican, will face Republican challengers Roger Booth Sr., Terry Morris, Conrad Reiter and Marshall Woody Wright and Democratic challengers Myrna Holland and Cyril Thiel Jr. for two, four-year terms.
There are no challengers in any race in Forest Home Township, an all-Republican ballot. Supervisor Terry Smith, Clerk Suzanne Mahan, Treasurer Theresa Kent and trustees Dean Crandall and Dan Steiner are running unopposed to keep their four-year seats. Voters also will be asked to approve a 1-mill levy for road work through 2012.
There are no contested races in Helena Township. Supervisor Penny Wagner, Clerk V. Ferol Frank and trustees Jim Gurr and Rick Teague, all Republicans, are running unopposed to retain their four-year posts, as is Democratic Treasurer Catherine Rice.
In Jordan Township, Democratic Supervisor Joseph Haney is running against Republican challenger Brian Meads for the four-year office. Democratic Clerk Lucille Lercel and Treasurer Susan Meads are running unopposed to retain their four-year seats. Incumbent Trustee Donna Theibert is running against challengers Tim Morris and Philip Nemecek, all Republicans, for two, four-year terms.
In Kearney Township, Republican newcomer Rolland Katz is running unopposed for the four-year supervisor position, and Republican Clerk Sally Petrie has no competition for the four-year post. Treasurer Mary Jo Cole will face challenger Alan Odom, both Republicans, for the four-year seat. Incumbent Trustee Edward Niepoth Jr., a Republican, will face Republican challenger John Fleet and Democratic challenger Peter Balestrieri for two, four-year terms.
In Mancelona Township, Supervisor Gerald Patrick will face Chuck Johnson, both Republicans, for the four-year seat. Clerk Maurice Conway McGleish will challenge Mike Biehl, both Republicans, for the four-year position. Republican Treasurer C. Sue Robinson is running unopposed for the four-year office. No incumbent trustees are running for re-election. Candidates for the two, four-year terms include Republicans D. Ron Allen, Ernest Anger II, George Ouvry, Dan Robinson and Robert Robinson and Democrats Michael Hayes and Melvin Straight. Republican Linden Bielecki is running unopposed for township constable.
Milton Township Supervisor Lon Bargy is up against challenger Rick Dronkowski for the four-year seat in the all-Republican ballot. Contenders for the four-year clerk post include newcomers Sandra Ball and Diane Tollefson. Treasurer Liz Atkinson will defend the four-year office from challenger Noreen Stanley. Incumbent trustees Thomas Cole and Brett Pharo will challenge Keith Termaat for two, four-year terms.
Star Township Supervisor Richard Steel, Clerk Marilyn Rypkowski and Treasurer Scott Brown, all Republicans, are running unopposed for their four-year seats. No incumbents are running for township trustee, and Republican contenders include Kenneth Bigger, Tammi Fuller and Christian Marcus. Voters will be asked to renew a four-year, 1-mill levy for fire protection services, effective from 2010-2013, and approve a 1-mill levy for road work through 2011.
No incumbents are running for either supervisor or clerk in Torch Lake Township. Republican newcomers Ronald Frohriep and George Parker are seeking the four-year supervisor post, and Republican contenders Erin Shepley and Kathy Windiate are vying for the four-year clerk position. Republican Treasurer Sharon Schultz is running unopposed to retain the four-year seat. Incumbent Trustee Alan Martel, a Republican, will face Republican challengers Dieter Amos and J. Larry Tomlinson and Democratic challenger Michael Kiwak for two, four-year terms. Republican Norm Taube is running unopposed for constable.
There are no contested races on the all-Republican ballot in Warner Township. Supervisor Matthew Dobrzelewski, Clerk Sally Skop and Treasurer Lori Herman are running unopposed for their four-year posts. No one is running for trustee. Voters also will be asked to approve a 1-mill levy for the Elmira-Warner Fire Authority through 2011.
BENZIE COUNTY
In Benzie County, nine Republicans and seven Democrats are running for two-year terms on the commission board. Incumbent Trustee Mark Roper, a Republican, and Delores Duddles-Berta, a Democrat, are unopposed in the first district. Incumbent Trustee Mary Pitcher faces fellow Republican Sally Casey for office in the second district, where Phillip Kiteley, a Democrat, also is running. Richard Bayer, a Republican, is running in the third district, as are Democratic candidates Shauna Fite and Kristin Hollenbeck. Incumbent Trustee Anne Damm, a Democrat, and Uledene Merrill, a Republican, are vying for the fourth district seat. Incumbent Trustee Frank Walterhouse, a Republican, and Democratic candidate Kathy Ralston seek office in the fifth district. Trustee Tom Kelley hopes to keep his seat from fellow Republican Roger Hubbell in the sixth district. Incumbent Trustee Donald Smeltzer, a Republican, and Democratic candidate Donald Tanner are running in the seventh district.
All other county offices are four-year terms. Uncontested races include Clerk Dawn Olney, Treasurer Linda Wilson and Surveyor John Smendzuik, all Republicans seeking re-election. Undersheriff Rory Heckman faces fellow Republicans Jeff Morse and Damon Wilkes for the sheriff position. Brant Downing, a Democrat, also is vying for the sheriff position. Prosecutor Anthony Cicchelli's name is on the ballot but he has withdrawn from the race. Republican John Daugherty and Michael Smith, a Democrat, also seek the prosecutor's post. Drain commissioner candidates include incumbent Terry Money, a Republican, and challenger Eric Pyne, a Democrat. Register of Deeds Michelle Gray is running against fellow Republican Amy Bissell.
In the state House race for the 101st District Republicans Gregory Ferguson, Ray Franz, Janice McCraner and Mike McManus compete for the Republican nomination, while Democrat Dan Scripps is unopposed.
The only contested race in Almira Township is for treasurer, where incumbent Dawn Campeau, a Republican, faces Jill Kimball, a Democrat. Newcomer Vance Bates, a Republican, is unopposed for supervisor. Clerk Mary Dort, a Republican, has no challengers for her seat, nor do trustees Kirt Giddis, a Republican, and Diana Nolan, a Democrat. The ballot includes a six-year, 1.5-mill tax for fire and EMS services.
One incumbent and five challengers are up for two trustee seats in Benzonia Township. They include incumbent Patricia Delonnay, fellow Republicans Sheila Ann Priest, Nate Capper and Fred Milliron Jr., as well as Democrat challengers Gayle Rice and Mary Charlotte Robling. Supervisor James Sheets, a Democrat, and Treasurer Karen Burns, a Republican, are unchallenged for re-election. Clerk Patricia Mead is up against fellow Republican Tammy Case.
An uncontested all-Republican ballot in Blaine Township has only one newcomer. Incumbent Walter Rohn and newcomer Glenn Mensching Jr. are up for two trustee seats. Supervisor Tom Campbell, Clerk Charlotte Putney and Treasurer Emilie Kimpel are all unopposed.
The only contested race in Colfax Township is for supervisor, where incumbent Michael Moorman faces fellow Democrat Timothy Windrim Sr. Clerk Susan Besey and Treasurer Laura Draeger, both Democrats, are up for re-election, as are Trustee Michael Skurski, a Republican, and Trustee Jack Richter, a Democrat.
Crystal Lake Township will have a no-contest election. Supervisor Robert Barton, a Republican, is up for re-election, as are trustees Richard Nielsen and Bruce Wallon Jr., also Republicans. Democratic candidate Shelley Rodal is up for treasurer and Brenda Nye, a Republican, is running for clerk.
Democratic office holders in Gilmore Township face no opposition for re-election. They include Supervisor Carl Noffsinger, Clerk Sharyn Bower, Treasurer Laura Manville, and trustees Ronald Beyette and Douglas Holmes.
The only uncontested race in Homestead Township is for the re-election of Treasurer Shelley Rosa, a Republican. Republican candidates Roger Chorley and Dale Jeske face off to unseat Supervisor Cathy Demitroff, a Democrat. Clerk Mary Geetings vies to keep her seat from fellow Republican Don Crossman and Democratic challenger Franklin Pelky. Incumbent Trustee Matt Miller faces fellow Republicans Andy Loveland and Carol Moore, as well as Democratic candidate Rosalie Pelch for two trustee seats. The ballot includes a four-year, 1-mill tax proposal to fund the fire department.
In Inland Township, Clerk Marilyn Wareham and trustees Mary Miller and Gerald Bush, all Republicans, face no opposition for re-election. Bruce Andersen Sr., a Republican, is running to unseat Supervisor Paul Beechraft, a Democrat. Republican candidates Nicole Meredith and Terry Tolar face off for treasurer, along with Sherri Ockert-Poulisse, a Democrat.
Joyfield Township has an all-Republican ballot. Candidates Ken Fallowfield and Larry Lathwell, a current trustee, are running for supervisor. Clerk Gary Lathwell and Treasurer Debra Lindgren face no opposition for re-election. Incumbent Trustee David Kane and challengers Guy Sauer and Mark Alan Evans are up for two trustee spots.
Office holders in Lake Township are unchallenged for re-election. They include Supervisor William Robinson, Clerk Anna Grobe and Treasurer Pamela Radabaugh, all Republicans, as well as trustees James Webber, a Democrat, and Harlan Reichle, a Republican.
In Platte Township, Clerk Alison Michalak and Treasurer Cynthia Ullom, both Republican, are unopposed. Newcomers James Coombs and Paul Solem, both Republican, vie for the supervisor position. The race for two trustee spots includes incumbent Marcia Davis and fellow Democrats David Basey and Susan Lavender. Republican candidate Walt Harris also is running for trustee. The ballot includes a four-year, 1-mill tax proposal to fund the fire department.
The all-Republican ballot in Weldon Township has only one contested race. Candidate Karri Stevens vies to unseat Treasurer Mary Wixson. Supervisor Dean Rhodes, Clerk Fran Griffin and trustees Sue Meredith and Gary Stevens are all unopposed for re-election.
CHARLEVOIX COUNTY
There are two newcomer candidates for both sheriff and clerk in Charlevoix County, all four on the Republican ballot for the four-year positions. William Donald Schneider and Donald Sproul are running for sheriff, while Cheryl Potter Browe and James Eisley are candidates for clerk. The remaining Republican incumbents who hold four-year county positions are unchallenged. They include Prosecutor John Jarema, Treasurer Marilyn Cousineau, Register of Deeds Charlene Novotny, Drain Commissioner Marc Seelye and Surveyor Lawrence Feindt.
All six incumbent county commissioners are running for re-election for additional two-year terms and four of them face challengers. Incumbents Shirlene Tripp and Chris Christensen are unopposed as Republicans. Republican Ronald Reinhardt is running for re-election and Democratic candidate Mike Webster also seeks his position. Incumbent Joel Evans is challenged by Victor Patrick and incumbent Robert Drebenstedt faces Jerry Meggison, all on the Republican ticket. Finally, incumbent Shirley Roloff is challenged by three fellow Republicans, including Tim Boyko, Richard Gillespie and Thomas Meggison.
County officials also will ask voters to approve a four-year transit system operational tax renewal request at a rate of 0.25 mills. The tax would generate an estimated $514,781 in 2009, if approved by voters. Voters also will decide whether separate tax limitations should be enacted for four years on the county, townships and intermediate school districts within the county, the combined total of which would not exceed 5.9 mills. A senior citizen programming millage renewal request also is on the ballot, a four-year tax at a rate of 0.4 mills. The levy would raise an estimated $823,650 in 2008, if approved by voters.
Finally, voters will decide whether to renew a four-year millage request at a rate of 0.15 mills for recycling programs. The tax would generate an estimated $308,869 in 2008, if approved.
In the 105th District state House race, Republican incumbent Kevin Elsenheimer and Democratic challeger Connie Saltonstall are unopposed.
The 1st Congressional District primary race features a battle between Republican hopefuls Tom Casperson, Don Hooper and Linda Goldthorpe for the right to face incumbent Democrat Bart Stupak in November.
The race for U.S. Senate features incumbent Democrat Carl Levin and Republican challenger Jack Hoogendyk Jr., both unopposed.
Four incumbent Bay Township officials are unopposed for additional four-year terms and there is no candidate on the ballot for treasurer. The incumbent candidates are: Supervisor Larry Moeschke, Clerk James Vanek and trustees Georganna Monk and David Simmons.
Three newcomer candidates in Boyne Valley Township are running for the four-year clerk's position, including Republican Lynn Sparks and Democrats Judith Judkins and Debra Taylor. Incumbent Supervisor Leonard Zakrzewski and Treasurer Marie Kelenske are both unopposed for additional four-year terms on the Republican ticket. Incumbent Trustee Randall Matelski and Constable Leland Dunham are unopposed for additional four-year terms on the Democratic ballot. Finally, newcomer Bernard Kondrat is unopposed as a Republican for four years as a trustee. Township officials also will ask voters to consider a four-year tax renewal at a rate of 1 mill for ambulance service, replacing a millage that expired last year. The tax would generate an estimated $156,888 in 2008 if approved. Voters will decide on a four-year tax renewal at a rate of 0.3 mills for the operation of the library, replacing a millage that already expired. The tax would raise an estimated $47,066 in 2009 if approved.
There are five unopposed Democratic candidates for four-year terms in Chandler Township, including four incumbents. They are Supervisor Dennis Howard, Clerk Myron Matz, Treasurer Joan Colbert and Trustee Samuel Strong. Newcomer Christy Mason is unopposed for trustee. Chandler Township officials also seek voter approval of a four-year tax renewal at a rate of 1 mill for fire department operations and equipment purchases. The tax would generate an estimated $18,690 in 2008 if approved.
Five incumbent elected officials in Charlevoix Township are unopposed for additional four-year terms, four Republicans and one Democrat. Supervisor H. Dale Glass, Clerk Carol Martin, Treasurer Theda Williams and trustees Charles Center and Nancy Rajewski are all running. Williams is the lone Democrat.
There are five cand idates for the five open four-year positions in Evangeline Township and all are incumbent Republicans. They include Supervisor Douglas Shields, Clerk Josette Lory, Treasurer Jodie Adams and trustees Michelle Cortright and James Howell.
Five incumbent Republicans are unopposed for re-election to additional four-year terms in Eveline Township. They are Supervisor John Vrondran, Clerk Michelle Johnson, Treasurer Ronald Chapman and trustees Eric Beislag and Diane Bajko. Township officials also seek voter approval of a two-year tax renewal request at a rate of 1 mill for road construction and maintenance. The tax would raise an estimated $251,052 in 2008 if approved.
There are two candidates for a four-year term as clerk in Hayes Township, including incumbent Republican Marlene Golovich and Democratic candidate Michelle Crandell. The remaining four candidates are unchallenged incumbents, including Supervisor Ethel Knepp, Treasurer W. Robbin Kraft and Trustee Douglas Kuebler, all Republicans, plus Democratic Trustee Jim Rudolph.
Five candidates are unopposed for four-year positions in Hudson Township, including four incumbents. Incumbent Supervisor Terrence Erber and trustees Caroline Kobylczak and Ross Will Payton are on the Democratic ballot, while incumbent Clerk Frank Wasylewski is on the Republican ticket. Newcomer candidate Samuel Aeschliman is running for treasurer as a Democrat.
There are five incumbent elected officials unopposed for additional four-year terms in Marion Township on the Republican ticket. They include Supervisor Wilson Boss, Clerk Timothy Matchett, Treasurer Sonja Martin and trustees Joanne Jones and Joe Seidel. Township officials also seek voter approval of a three-year renewal at a rate of 1.5 mills for road construction and maintenance. Voters approved a similar millage in 2004, which expired last year. The tax would generate an estimated $120,088 in 2008 if approved.
There are no candidates for any of the five open four-year positions in Melrose Township, including supervisor, clerk, treasurer and two trustee spots. Township officials are seeking voter approval of a four-year millage renewal request at a rate of 0.3 mills for library operational costs. The tax would raise an estimated $32,675 in 2009 if approved.
There are six newcomer candidates running for elected positions in Norwood Township, including supervisor, clerk and trustee. They include Dennis Way and Frank Hamilton for supervisor, Thomas Mielke, David Ridenour and Douglas Warner for trustee, and Dana Pajtas for clerk. Incumbent Treasurer David Leusink is unopposed and all candidates in Norwood Township appear on the Republican ballot.
Three newcomer candidates for four years as treasurer are on the ballot in Peaine Township, including Democrat Larry Kubic and Republicans Nancy Saxton and Jean Kingsley. Incumbent Supervisor John Works Jr. is running for re-election to another four-year term as a Republican, a position also sought by Democratic candidate John Gallagher. Incumbent Clerk Colleen Martin and Trustee Paul Welke are unopposed for additional four-year terms on the Republican ballot. Finally, incumbent Trustee Peter Lodico is unopposed as a Republican for another four-year term, while newcomer Democratic candidate Robert Hoogendoom is unopposed for four years as trustee. Township officials also ask voters to consider a five-year tax renewal at a rate of 4 mills for general operational funds, replacing a millage that expires this year. The tax would generate an estimated $278,280 in 2009 if approved. Voters also will decide on a five-year transfer station millage renewal request at 2 mills, replacing a tax that is set to expire this year. The tax would generate an estimated $139,140 in 2009 if approved. Voters also will decide on a third five-year millage renewal request for fire protection services, to replace an existing tax that will expire this year. The proposed 1 mill rate would generate an estimated $69,570 in 2009 if approved.
All five incumbents in St. James Township are running for re-election to additional four-year terms and there are two challengers, all on the Republican ballot. Supervisor Donald Vyse and Treasurer James Wojan are unopposed. However, Clerk Jean Palmer is challenged by Pamela O'Brien, and trustees Timothy McDonough and Richard Speck are challenged by Bob Tidmore. Officials also seek voter approval of a four-year levy at a rate of 1 mill for emergency medical services. The tax would raise an estimated $45,018 in 2008 if approved.
Five incumbents seeking re-election to additional four-year terms as Republicans are on the ballot in South Arm Township. They include: Supervisor Robert Christensen, Clerk Anita Stephens, Treasurer Lucille Malpass and trustees Robert Draves Jr. and Neil Olstrom.
Incumbent Wilson Township Supervisor Todd Sorenson is running for re-election to an additional four-year term and is challenged by fellow Republican Zachary Shaltz. Clerk Marilyn Beebe and Treasurer Kerri Reinhardt are unopposed for additional four-year terms as Republicans. Finally, incumbent trustees Jon Jasinski and Jeff Argetsinger are challenged by Louis Fall on the Republican ticket. Township officials also seek voter approval of two five-year tax renewals at a rate of 1 mill each for road construction and maintenance, as well as fire and ambulance services. The taxes each would raise an estimated $68,079 in 2009 if approved.
CHEBOYGAN COUNTY
There is only candidate for sheriff, treasurer and surveyor in Cheboygan County, along with several seats on the county board. Incumbent Sheriff Dale Clarmont, incumbent Treasurer Linda Cronan and incumbent Surveyor James Granger are unopposed as Republicans for additional four-year terms. Incumbent Prosecutor Catherine Mickey Castagne seeks another four-year term in the Republican race and is challenged by Cheboygan attorney Scott Ingersoll. Cheboygan attorney Daryl Vizina is also running for prosecutor as a Democrat. Plus, incumbent Clerk Mary Ellen Tryban is running for another four-year term as a Republican and Democratic candidate Cynthia Kress also seeks that office.
Five of the seven incumbent county commissioners are without opposition for additional two-year terms, including Linda Socha, Pete Redmond and John Wallace, Republicans, as well as Democrats Alice Mushlock and Leonard Page. Incumbent Commissioner Herb Makima is running for re-election as a Democrat in the second district, where Republican candidate Don Horrocks also is running. Finally, incumbent Commissioner Robert Bolinger seeks another term as a Republican in the seventh district, where Democratic candidate Kathleen LaPeer is running.
No incumbent road commissioners are seeking re-election in Cheboygan County and there are 10 candidates for three open seats with staggered term lengths. The six-year term has three candidates, including Democrat David Brandt and Republicans Leroy Ormsbee and Brett Wyatt. The four-year term also has three candidates, including Democrat Bob Chadwick and Republicans Ken Paquet and Mike Sherwood. The shortest open road commissioner term is two years, and there are four candidates: Democrat Patrick McGinnis and Republicans David Brown, Gerald Brown and William Flickinger.
There are two candidates for drain commissioner, a four-year position, including incumbent Democrat John Pietrangelo and Republican challenger Dennis Lennox.
In the 89th District Court attorneys Maria Barton, Gregory Rotter, James Gilbert, Chuck Hoffman and Daniel Martin seek one open judicial seat. The top two vote-getters in the primary will face off in the November general election for a six-year term.

One incumbent Aloha Township official is unopposed for another four-year term, Clerk Barbara Hall, a Republican. Incumbent Supervisor Charles Maziasz, a Democrat, is running for re-election and the seat also is sought by Republican challenger Brenda Chimner. Incumbent Treasurer Charles Veneros is seeking re-election as a Republican, a seat also sought by Democratic challenger Karen Palmer. Six incumbent township officials in Beaugrand Township are without opposition for four-year terms, all Republicans except one. They include Supervisor Marcia Rocheleau, Clerk Terri Sarrault, Treasurer Janice Girard, Constable Robert Socha and trustees John Wanke and Robert Schuler. Socha was appointed constable and is running for the first time, and Schuler is the only Democrat.
All elected officials in Benton Township are running for re-election for additional four-year terms, with just one challenger for supervisor. Incumbent Supervisor Bruce Brandt is running as a Democrat and Republican candidate David McCauslin seeks the same post. All other officials are unopposed, including Clerk Maureen Engle, Treasurer Ann Couture, Constable Timothy Fenlon and Trustee Charles Beckwith, all Republicans. Incumbent Trustee Beverly Wixson also seeks re-election as a Democrat. Benton Township officials also seek approval of a new tax of not more than $24 per household per year to cover the cost of a recycling program.
There are no contested races in Burt Township and all candidates for the four-year positions are Republican. They include incumbents Supervisor Harold Koviak, Treasurer Shirley Reimann, Constable Edward Reimann and Trustee Eugene Hodulik. Newcomers Donna McDougall for clerk and Arthur Pillen for trustee also face no opponents. Township officials seek voter approval of three four-year tax levies at a rate of 0.5 mills each to cover general township operations, fire protection and road upgrades. The taxes would each raise an estimated $55,000 in 2008 if approved. The proposed township operational and fire protection millages are renewals, while the road tax proposal is an increase.
All incumbents are running for re-election to additional four-year terms in Ellis Township, and only the treasurer's post has any challengers. Incumbent Treasurer Carolyn Taglauer will defend her seat from two Republican challengers, Pat Hutchison and Centhia Whalen. Democratic challenger Catherine Jane Corps also seeks the treasurer's post. Otherwise, all remaining incumbents are unchallenged, including Supervisor Fullford James LaPeer, Clerk Sheryl Hilliker and trustees Robert Hope and Charles Beebe. LaPeer, Hilliker and Beebe will appear on the Democratic ballot and Robert Hope on the Republican ticket. Township officials seek voter approval of a four-year road maintenance and improvement tax renewal at a rate of 2 mills. The tax would raise an estimated $54,034 in 2009 if approved.
There are multiple candidates in all but two races in Forest Township for four-year positions, treasurer and constable. Incumbent Treasurer Judy Stevens and incumbent Constable Duane Buzzell are both unopposed Democrats. Incumbent Supervisor Harry Hopkins is challenged on the Democratic ticket by Wally Larson, while appointed incumbent Clerk Colleen VanHuysen is running as a Republican and Democrat Betty Musser seeks the same spot. There are four candidates for two trustee positions, two Republicans and two Democrats. Incumbent Trustee Pam Crowe is on the Republican ballot with Brian Janeczek, and incumbent Trustee Marlene Hopkins is on the Democratic ballot with Karen Lecureux.
There are two candidates for the four-year supervisor seat in Grant Township, incumbent Democrat Roger Wooden and Republican John Ressler. Four incumbents are seeking re-election to four-year terms and are unopposed, including Democratic Clerk Kathleen M. Hart and the remaining Republicans: Treasurer Rachel Vallance and trustees Karen Hempenstall and Kathleen Ann Hart. There are three Democratic candidates for constable, including C. In Hebron Township, five incumbents are running for re-election to additional four-year terms and do not face any challengers. They include Supervisor Charles Ostwald, Clerk Gary Douglas and trustees Judith Ostwald and Lisa Wheelock, all Democrats. Incumbent Treasurer Jack Douglas is unopposed as a Republican.
There are two Republican candidates for a four-year term as supervisor in Inverness Township, including the incumbent Ronald Neuman and former supervisor Fred Weeks. Four other incumbents do not face challengers for re-election to four-year terms, including Clerk Jean Beethem, Treasurer Fred Maxwell and the two constables, Roderick Jones III and Richard Jankoviak. All are Republican, except Jankoviak, who is a Democrat. There are three candidates for two trustee positions, two Republicans and one Democrat. Incumbents James Barrette and Bernard Schramm will appear on the GOP ticket and challenger Tim Borowicz will be on the Democratic ballot.
All five elected officials in Koehler Township are running for re-election to additional four-year terms as Republicans and all challengers also are Republicans. Supervisor Russell Crawford is challenged by Brenda Nash, Clerk Cheryl Procknow is challenged by Keith Shugar, and Treasurer Elizabeth Cribb is challenged by Brenda Flowers. Trustees Frank Cribb and Richard Knight are unopposed. Koehler Township officials also seek approval of a new tax of not more than $24 per household per year to cover the cost of a recycling program.
All five elected officials in Mackinaw Township are unopposed for additional four-year terms. The Republicans are Supervisor Barry Dean, Clerk Jack Keck and Trustee Chris Rogala. The Democrats are Treasurer Bonnie Bertchinger and Trustee Terry Davis.
All five elected officials in Mentor Township are running as Republicans for additional four-year terms and are unopposed. They include Supervisor Pete Canistra, Clerk Yvonne Rensel, Treasurer Phyllis Mattson and trustees Denise Leese and William Mickey.
Only one candidate in Mullett Township is not an incumbent and there are no contested races for the four-year terms. Republican Rachel Osborn is running for clerk, along with incumbents Treasurer Karen Morgan, Constable Edward St. Pierre and trustees John Brown and Dennis John Dombroski, all Republicans. Democratic Supervisor Willard Morgan Jr. also seeks re-election. Township officials seek voter approval of a four-year tax renewal at a rate of 1 mill to fund general township operations. The millage would raise an estimated $103,065 in 2009 if approved. Mullett Township voters also will decide on a second four-year millage renewal request at a rate of 1.5 mills for fire protection services. The millage would raise an estimated $154,598 in 2009 if approved.
There is only one elected four-year position in Munro Township that has more than one candidate running. Incumbent Supervisor Charles Antkoviak will be on the Democratic ticket and Keith Sipperly will be on the Republican ballot. The remaining incumbents are unopposed, including Treasurer Cheryl Dotski, Constable Matthew Ginop and Trustee Donald Tracey, all Republicans. The Democrats are incumbent Clerk Linda Ginop and incumbent Trustee Wilfred Mandrick.
Five incumbents are running as Republicans for re-election to additional four-year terms in Nunda Township and there is one Democratic challenger. Democrat Jacalyn Bolinger is running for clerk. The remaining incumbents on the ballot are: Clerk E. Marie Sloan, Supervisor John Moore, Treasurer Gloria Pierson and trustees Ross Peppler and Sandra Stafford. Nunda Township officials seek voter approval of a four-year fire protection tax renewal at a rate of 1.5 mills. The tax would raise an estimated $60,604 in 2009 if approved.
Ten candidates are running for four-year positions in Tuscarora Township, just one a Democrat. Newcomer Michael Ridley is unopposed for supervisor, while incumbent Clerk Susan Fisher is challenged by Rebecca Behm. Incumbent Treasurer Bobbi Balazovic is running unopposed, while incumbent trustees Richard Rohr and Craig Waldron will defend their positions from challenger Bill Jones. Jane McGinnis is the only Democratic candidate and is running for trustee. Finally, there are two candidates for five open seats on the Parks Commission, including incumbent Jennifer Ann Andrew and newcomer James Purtill. Tuscarora Township officials seek approval of a new tax of not more than $24 per household per year to cover the cost of a recycling program.
Walker Township Supervisor Hayden Trigg Wilson seeks re-election to another four-year term as a Republican; former Supervisor Brian Veihl wants the same spot as a Democrat. Clerk Charles Haines is challenged by fellow Democrat Etta O'Henley for a four-year term, while incumbent Treasurer Donna Soules is unopposed on the same ticket. Also, incumbent Trustee Gail Southwell, a Republican, is running for re-election for another four-year term and newcomer Democrats Marsha Passino and Emery Soules are running for trustee, as well. Township officials seek voter approval of a three-year tax renewal for the township's building fund at a rate of 1 mill. The tax would generate an estimated $7,750 in 2009 if approved.
Waverly Township voters will choose between two newcomer Republicans for a four-year term as supervisor, including Marc Clark and Michael Hart. Incumbent Clerk Eunice Hart and Treasurer Dawn Wregglesworth will both appear on the Republican ballot unchallenged for additional four-year terms. Incumbent Trustee Donald Libby will appear on the Democratic ballot for another four-year term, along with candidate Thomas Hart. Republican candidate Isaac Morgan also is running for four years as trustee. Finally, the two incumbent constables are running for re-election to additional four-year terms without challengers, including Republican Erick Wregglesworth and Democrat Donald Schlaufman. Township officials seek approval of a new tax of not more than $24 per household per year to cover the cost of a recycling program. Voters will also be asked to decide on a three-year fire department operational fund levy at a rate of 1.25 mills.
All five incumbents in Wilmot Township are running for re-election to additional four-year terms, with just one challenger among them. Incumbent Supervisor Michael Wilcome will defend his position from Patty Croft on the Republican ticket. Otherwise, the remaining incumbents stand unopposed, including Democratic Clerk Gwendolyn Smith and Trustee Frank Poznanski Jr., as well as Republican incumbents Catherine Brady as treasurer and Trustee Gerald Flickinger.
CRAWFORD COUNTY
Clerk Sandra Moore is unopposed as a Republican for re-election to a four-year term. Sheriff Kirk Wakefield does not face a challenger in his bid for re-election to another four-year term, nor does Treasurer Joseph Wakeley. Both are Republicans. Two Grayling attorneys are running for the four-year prosecutor post, while incumbent John Huss is not seeking re-election. Everette Ayers and David Sabin are running as Republicans.
Incumbent Road Commissioner James Burtch is unopposed as a Republican for re-election to a six-year term.
All seven incumbent members of the Crawford County Board of Commissioners are unopposed for re-election to two-year terms, all but one as a Republican. Kathy Rogers, Scott Hanson, Shelley Pinkelman, Mike Lange, Dave Stephenson and Terry Beardslee are Republican candidates, while Rick Anderson is running as a Democrat.
In the 106th District state House race, voters will choose between Howard Viegelahn, of Rogers City, Peter Pettalia, of Presque Isle, and Everett Swift, of Hillman, in the Republican primary. The Democratic primary will pit former state Rep. Andy Neumann of Alpena against Casey Viegelahn of Rogers City.
The 1st Congressional District primary race features a battle between Republican hopefuls Tom Casperson, Don Hooper and Linda Goldthorpe for the right to face incumbent Democrat Bart Stupak in November.
The race for U.S. Senate features incumbent Democrat Carl Levin and Republican challenger Jack Hoogendyk Jr., who are both unopposed.
Beaver Creek Township Supervisor Lee Riley seeks re-election to another four-year term as a Republican and is challenged by two other Republican candidates, including Brian Ashton and Kathleen Pardo. Incumbent Clerk Sharon Hartman is running for re-election to a four-year term and is challenged by fellow Republican Kim VanNuck. Incumbent Treasurer Vivian Balmes is unopposed as a Republican for another four-year term. Just one incumbent is running for re-election to a four-year term as trustee, Republican Gary Summers. There are two open seats and the other two Republican candidates are Meagan Little and Billie Jo Miller.
Frederic Township Supervisor Jeff Kea, a Republican, seeks re-election to a four-year term, a seat also sought by Democratic candidate William Johnson Jr. Incumbent Clerk Nancy Bindschatel and incumbent Treasurer Sandra Barber are unopposed for four-year terms, both as Democrats. Four new candidates are running for two open township trustee positions, two Republicans and two Democrats. The Republicans are Matthew Hough and Brian Hulbert, while the Democrats are James Madill and Stephen Wilson. Township officials seek voter approval of a new five-year tax for ambulance services at a rate of 0.95 mills. The tax would raise an estimated $54,632 in 2008 if approved. Voters also will decide whether to renew a four-year tax of 2 mills for fire protection services, which is set to expire in December. The tax would raise an estimated $117,316 in 2009 if approved.
Grayling Township Supervisor Terry Wright is running as a Republican for re-election to a four-year term, a position also sought by Democratic candidate Michael Duffy. Incumbent Clerk Monica Ashton is unopposed as a Republican for re-election to a four-year term, while Republican candidates Cindy Olson and Cheryll Ruley seek the four-year treasurer seat. Two incumbent Grayling Township trustees are running as Republicans for re-election to four-year terms, Shawn Kraycs and Dennis Long. They are challenged by fellow Republicans Duane Brooks, Linda Munsey, James Reed and Travis Roberts.
Lovells Township Supervisor Frederick Schaibly, a Democrat, is unopposed for another four-year term, along with Republican Treasurer Ann Duby. Three candidates seek the clerk's position: Republican Cynthia Infante and Democrats Tamara Kengel and Jan Reynolds. One incumbent seeks re-election as a Lovells Township trustee for another four years, Democrat Delphine Nowaczyk. Republican Annette Stimpson seeks one of the two open seats.
Maple Forest Township Supervisor Mark Kriss is unopposed as a Republican for re-election to a four-year term, while incumbent Clerk Sandra Baynham is unopposed as a Democrat for re-election to a four-year term. Incumbent Treasurer Denise Babbitt is running for re-election to a four-year term as a Democrat, while Republican candidate Joan Thompson also seeks that seat. Incumbent trustees Bernard Feldhauser and Kristine Madill are both unopposed as Democrats for re-election to four-year terms. Officials will seek voter approval of a 1 mill tax levy for four years to provide funds for emergency services, including fire and ambulance. It would raise an estimated $25,991 in 2008 if approved.
South Branch Township Supervisor Tom Kozlowski is unopposed as a Democrat for re-election to a four-year term, while incumbent Clerk Lynn George and incumbent Treasurer Suzanne Luck are unopposed as Republicans for additional four-year terms. Incumbent South Branch Township trustees Michael Janisse and Paul Musselman are running unopposed as Republicans for re-election to four-year terms.
EMMET COUNTY
An all-Republican ballot for county offices has only two challengers. Clerk Gail Martin is vying to defend her position from Jill Brown, and challenger Dan Plasencia is running to unseat Commissioner Alan Behan in the fourth district. The remaining officials are unopposed: Prosecutor James Linderman, Sheriff Peter Wallin, Treasurer Marilyn May, Register of Deeds Michele Stine and Drain Commissioner Arden Bawkey. Commissioner candidates include James Tamlyn for District 1, Leroy Gregory for District 2, Thomas Shier for District 3, Jack L. Jones for District 5, Tom Foltz for District 6 and Les Atchison for District 7. Commissioners are elected to two-year terms, while other county and township officials are elected to four-year terms. The ballot includes a proposal for a four-year tax of 5.6 mills for the county, 2 mills for the townships and 0.2 mills for the Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District. Another proposal asks for a four-year, 0.25-mill levy for advanced life support ambulance service.
Candidates for the 107th District state House seat, Republican Alex Strobehn of Sault Ste. Marie and Democratic incumbent Gary McDowell of Rudyard, are unopposed in the primary.

One newcomer is running in the uncontested Carp Lake Township election. Newcomer Angie Berry, a Democrat, is up for clerk. Supervisor Paul Teike, a Republican, and Treasurer Catherine Freebairn, a Democrat, are unopposed. Republican trustees Robert Roll and Phil Schmalzried also are unchallenged. The ballot includes a proposal for a four-year, 1-mill tax for road construction and maintenance. Another proposal asks for a four-year, 1-mill levy for the fire department.
Officials in Center Township are unopposed. They include Supervisor Edward Jurek, a Democrat; Clerk Bonnie Godzik, a Republican; Treasurer Michelle Zmikly, a Democrat; and trustees Robert Schneider and Judy Van Avery, both Republicans. The ballot includes a two-year, 1-mill tax for repairing and improving roads.
In Cross Village Township's uncontested election, Clerk Gene Reck, a Democrat, is unopposed for the supervisor position. Treasurer Marie Krupa, a Republican; Trustee Stephen Keller, a Republican; and Trustee Catherine Schlappi, a Democrat, are all unchallenged. No candidates are on the ballot for clerk. The ballot includes a proposal for a 15-year, 0.25-mill tax to fund the $150,000 purchase of the Cross Property for public use. The township would grant a conservation easement and wouldn't sell or transfer the property unless approved by the voters.
Friendship Township has an all-Republican ballot in an uncontested election. Trustee Frederick Troup is up for the supervisor position, while Clerk Janell Van Divner and Treasurer Marie Ward hope to keep their positions. Trustee Al Major and newcomer Gary Abent are up for two seats on the township board.
In Littlefield Township, Republican officials are unopposed, including Supervisor Damien Henning, Clerk Sondra Festerling, and trustees Katie Derrohn and Dean Morford. No candidates are on the ballot for the treasurer position.
Republican officials in Little Traverse Township are unchallenged. They include Supervisor William Dohm, Clerk Lynda Arman, Treasurer Connie Shepherd-O'Neill, and trustees Wayne Allerding and Ken Garver.
In Maple River Township, one newcomer is running in the all-Republican, uncontested election. Newcomer Tammy Gregory is up for clerk, while Supervisor John Eby, Treasurer Sally Ann Schreier and trustees John Hemstreet and David Schmalzried are unopposed.
The uncontested race in McKinley Township has all Republican candidates, including Supervisor Leonard Readmond, Clerk Roger Drier and Trustee Christopher Nathan. Elizabeth Ann Readmond is up for treasurer, Michael Bohn is running for trustee and Randolph Bricker Jr. is up for the constable position.
Republican officials in Pleasantview Township are unchallenged. They include Supervisor William Wiechmann, Clerk Debra Bosma, Treasurer Maureen Barkley and trustees Leslie Bosma and Robert Wurst.
The election in Readmond Township includes three newcomers. Supervisor Diana Call, a Democrat, seeks to defend her office from challenger Gordon Kruskie, a Republican. Molly Veling, a Republican, is unopposed for clerk, and Janet Hendricks, a Democrat, is unchallenged for treasurer. Trustee Harriet Jackson, a Republican, is up for re-election.
In Resort Township's all-Republican election, David Clink seeks to unseat Supervisor Robert Wheaton. Clerk Lucy Eppler is unopposed. Carolyn Jankowski faces no challengers for treasurer. Dean Carper and incumbent Donald Caird are unopposed for two seats on the township board. The ballot includes a four-year, 0.5-mill tax for fire and medical first responder services.
Springvale Township has an all-Republican ballot with one contested race. Treasurer Corrine Shomock seeks to keep her position from challenger Robert Kerton. Supervisor Thomas Bernard, Clerk Richard Brady and trustees Alyce Conrad and Vincent McGuiness are all unchallenged. The ballot includes a four-year, 1-mill tax for road repairs and improvements. Another proposal asks for a four-year, 1-mill levy for fire department operations and equipment.
Wawatam Township has an uncontested election. Supervisor Roger Moore, a Republican; Treasurer Elaine Desy, a Republican; and Constable David Paquet, a Democrat face no challengers. Grace Gwilt, a Republican, is unopposed for clerk. Roy Prillwitz and incumbent Robert Desy, both Republican, are up for two trustee seats. The ballot includes a four-year, 0.27-mill tax for contractual fire protection and related emergency services.
West Traverse Township's ballot has all Republican candidates. Supervisor Robert Sandford and Treasurer Kristi Hollingsworth are unopposed for their offices. Clerk Cynthia Fisher vies to keep her spot from challenger Teri Morse. John Baker, James Bartlett and incumbent Sophy Carpenter face off for two trustee seats. The ballot includes a four-year, 0.25-mill tax to operate and maintain the Thorne Swift Nature Preserve.
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY
Several Republican incumbents are unopposed for their county offices, including Clerk Linda Coburn, Treasurer William Rokos, Prosecutor Alan Schneider, Register of Deeds Peggy Haines, Drain Commissioner Kevin McElyea and Surveyor Robert Mitchell. Sheriff Scott Fewins, a Republican, is facing fellow Republican challengers Tom Bensley and Brian Weese.
In addition, several Republican incumbents are unopposed for their spots on the Board of Commissioners. Bruce Hooper, of District 1; Larry Inman, of District 2; Richard Thomas, of District 6; and Christine Maxbauer, of District 7, do not face challengers. Incumbent Herb Lemcool and challenger Michael Stepka, both Republicans, will square off in District 4, as will Republican incumbent Larry Fleis and Democratic challenger Phil Scott in District 8 and Republican incumbent Addison Wheelock Jr. and Democratic challenger Don Dierkes in District 9. Republican challengers Beth Friend and Vince Maloney are up for the open District 3 seat. Republican newcomer Dave Barr and Democratic newcomer Ross Richardson are competing for the open District 5 spot.
The Republican primary for the open 104th state House District features Tony Hefner against Wayne Schmidt while Democrat Roman Grucz is unopposed.
In Acme Township, the ballot consists entirely of Republican contenders. Incumbent Wayne Kladder and challenger Noelle Knopf face off for one, four-year term as township supervisor. Clerk Dorothy Dunville seeks to retain her four-year seat against challenger Pam Lewis. Treasurer candidates Nancy Edwardson and Linda Lou Wikle are competing for the four-year term. And incumbent trustees Ron Hardin, Paul Scott, Erick Takayama and Frank Zarafonitis will face challengers Tyler Veliquette and Doug White for four, four-year terms.
Blair Township Supervisor Marilyn Fleis, a Republican, seeks to retain the four-year seat against Republican challenger Patrick Pahl. Clerk Betty Tharp, a Democrat, and Republican Treasurer Brenda DeKuiper are running unopposed for four-year terms. Republican incumbent trustees Stacey Clous, Joseph Lowe, Mike Rademaker and Roger Zeits are running against Republicans James Pascoe and Duane Sanford and Democrat Jim Templin Jr. for four, four-year terms.
In East Bay Township, Republican Supervisor Glen Lile will face Republican Joseph Underwood and Democrat Gail Maison for the four-year seat. Clerk Susanne Courtade and Treasurer Tracey Bartlett, both Republicans, are running unopposed to retain their four-year offices. Incumbent trustees Craig Goodrich, Dale McAllister and Leroy Strait Jr. will square off against challengers Matthew Courtade, Bryan Marrow and Myrna Yeakle for four, four-year terms. All are Republicans. Also, six Republican candidates are running for seven, four-year openings on the Parks Commission, including incumbents Chris Biggs, Grace Macdonald, John Rudolph and Laura Truelove and challengers Leslie Couturier and Clarence Smith.
Fife Lake Township Supervisor Fred Joles, a Republican, faces Democratic challenger Linda Forwerck for the four-year position. Clerk Judith Houts and Treasurer Cathy Sorrow, both Republicans, are unopposed to retain their offices for four more years. Democratic incumbent Trustee Elizabeth Ingersoll is being challenged by Republicans Lynda Baut, Robert Meyer Sr. and Joanne Sommerfield for two, four-year terms. Voters also will be asked to approve a 0.75-mill operating millage.
In Garfield Township, Republican Supervisor Lee Wilson will face Republican challenger Chuck Korn for the four-year office, and Republican Clerk Kay Schumacher is running against Republican challenger Jodie Brady to keep her position for four more years. Treasurer Dennis Habedank, a Republican, is facing three party challengers in Jeane Blood, Eric Grebe and Tom Ward for the four-year seat. Republican incumbent trustees Brad Barnes, James Harvey and Leo Strait are vying for four, four-year terms with Republican challengers Molly Agostinelli, Robert Featherstone, Denise Schmuckal and Kathryn Wilson and Democratic challenger John Nelson.
Grant Township Supervisor Douglas Moyer, a Republican, is unopposed for the four-year seat. Republican Clerk Nancy Morairty and Democratic treasurer candidate Maureen Leonard are unopposed for the four-year posts. Republican incumbent trustees Crystal Breithaupt and Jan Malik are running unopposed for two, four-year terms.
Green Lake Township Supervisor Paul Biondo, a Republican, is being challenged by Democrat Thomas Karas for the four-year office. Republican Clerk Rita Dinger is unopposed for her four-year seat, and Republican Treasurer Sue Schroeter is vying to keep the four-year position from Republican challenger Lynette Ferman. Incumbent trustees David Bieganowski, Marvin Radtke Jr., Rick Sager and Sherry Lee West will face challengers Peter Hunt and Pat McDonald, all Republicans, for four, four-year terms. Voters also will be asked to renew a 1.5-mill levy for emergency services that would extend through 2013.
There are no contested races among the all-Republican field in Long Lake Township. Supervisor Karen Rosa, Clerk Carol Hoffman and incumbent trustees David Garvin, John Linnerson, Maureen Kennedy Templeton and Daniel Peter Wagner all are seeking to keep their four-year seats. No one is running for treasurer. Voters also will be asked to renew a 1-mill operational levy for emergency services through 2013.
The only newcomer in the Mayfield Township field is Republican Lucille Zenner, who is unopposed for township clerk. Supervisor John Emerald Ockert, Treasurer Mary Ockert and incumbent trustees Carl Frank Bauer and David Wolf, all Republicans, are unopposed to keep their four-year seats.
In Paradise Township, Supervisor Evelynne Marie Dean is running uncontested to keep the four-year post. Three Republican newcomers are running for township clerk, a four-year office, including Lisa Gulliver, Thomas Gene Raven and Peggy Swan. Incumbent Treasurer Jessica Sedlacek and challenger William King, both Republicans, are looking to win the four-year seat. Also, incumbent trustees Mitchell Sedlacek and Robert Whims are running against Carol Carr and Tim Trudell, all Republicans, for two, four-year terms. Voters also will be asked to renew a 1.5-mill levy for fire protection services through 2012, renew a 1-mill levy for ambulance services through 2010 and approve an additional 0.5 mills for ambulance services through 2010.
Peninsula Township Supervisor Robert Manigold and Clerk Monica Hoffman, both Republicans, are running unopposed for their four-year seats. Republican Treasurer David Weatherholt will face challenger Gil Uithol, also a Republican, for the four-year office. Incumbent trustees Jill Byron, Jim Horton and Penny Rosi, all Republicans, are running with Republican challenger Gary Wilson for four, four-year terms. Incumbent park commissioner Fred Stoye Jr. is running with newcomers Roy Barrett, Renee Crampton, Paula Kelley and Jerry Ostlund, all Republicans, for five, four-year terms. Also, voters will be asked to approve a four-year, 0.02-mill levy for the Traverse City Senior Center.
There are no contested races in Union Township. Supervisor Douglas Mansfield, Clerk Sheree Stein and Treasurer Charlotte LaFeve, all Republicans, are seeking to keep their four-year seats. Incumbent Trustee Nancy Wieland, a Republican, and Democratic newcomer Sheryl Tillitson are running for two, four-year terms.
An all-Republican ballot will go before voters in Whitewater Township. Supervisor Larry Lake will defend the four-year seat from challenger Annie Hill, and Clerk Carol Hockin caces challenger Emily Krogel. Two newcomers, Ardella Benak and Suzanne LeWallen, are vying for the four-year treasurer post. Incumbent trustees Arnell Boyd and Paul Hubbell are running against challenger Steve Zakrajsek for two, four-year terms.
KALKASKA COUNTY
Voters will find incumbents and newcomers on the ballot for the county races. Republican challengers Sonja Dunham, Deborah Hill and Julie Naasko are vying for the four-year clerk position. Prosecutor Brian Donnelly will face challenger and fellow Republican Patrick Fragel for the four-year post. Republican challengers JoAnn DeGraaf, Rosemarie Franco-Bell, Margaret Learner and Diana Miller want to serve four years as register of deeds. Republican Sheriff Bill Artress is running against Republican challenger Nelson Gelinas and Democratic challenger Dave Israel for the four-year position. Republican Surveyor Eugene Farrier, Republican Treasurer Gwen Gehrcke and Democratic Drain Commissioner Francis Kelly are unopposed to retain their four-year seats. Democrat Richard Brewer Jr. is the only candidate for the six-year county road commission.
All incumbent county commissioners are running for re-election to the two-year terms. In District 1, incumbent Rob Crambell will face Russell LaRowe, both Republicans. Republican incumbent Louis Nemeth will face Republican challenger Stuart McKinnon and Democratic challenger Fred Vonalt in District 2. District 3 incumbent George Shetler will face challenger Michael Cox; both are Republicans. Democratic incumbent Alan McCullen is unopposed in District 4. Democratic incumbent Louis Walter will face Republican challenger Carroll Sexton in District 5. District 6 incumbent Debra Kimball will compete against challenger Larry Wells, also a Republican. Republican incumbent Craig Wood will face party challenger John Wheeler in District 7.
Voters also will be asked to renew a five-year, 0.25-mill operational levy for the library.
The Republican primary for the open 104th state House District features Tony Hefner against Wayne Schmidt while Democrat Roman Grucz is unopposed.
In Bear Lake Township, Republican Supervisor William Jackson will defend the four-year seat from challenger Barbara Lopinski, also a Republican. Republican Clerk Carol Rosenberg is unopposed for the four-year position. Republican Treasurer Dolores Lucille Ridky will run against Democratic challenger Laura Purdill for the four-year office. Republican trustees Richard Dorrance and Bernice Sy will vie for four more years against Republican challengers Dale Majeski and Ronald Kea, and Democratic challenger Jim Knight.
There are no candidates on the ballot in Blue Lake Township. Voters, however, will be asked to approve a five-year, 0.60-mill levy for trash collection.
In Boardman Township, Republican Supervisor Gerald Douglas Gaultier, Democratic Clerk Geraldine Baxter and Republican Treasurer John David Babrick are running unopposed to retain their four-year posts. Republican trustees Toni Renee Gaultier and Barbara Lynn Uitvlugt will face Democratic challengers Karen Jean Puffer and Brian Patrick Sweeney for the two, four-year terms.
In Clearwater Township, Republican Supervisor David Grimm is running against Republican challenger Haider Kazim and Democratic challenger Larry Mac Barber for the four-year position. Republican challengers Barbara Crambell and Denise Foster are vying for the four-year clerk's post. Treasurer Sheryl Grimm will face challengers Michael Gaylord and Mona Saunders, all Republicans, for the four-year seat. Republican Trustee Bruce Belanger and Democratic Trustee Huse Johnson will face Republican challenger Chris Tracey for the two, four-year terms.
There are no contested races in Coldspings Township. Republican Supervisor Michael Neubecker, Republican Clerk Mary Hodges, Republican Treasurer Brenda Lambert, Republican Trustee Dennis Corrado and Democratic Trustee Virginia Bondy are unopposed to retain their four-year offices. Voters also will be asked to renew a four-year, 1-mill levy for fire and rescue services, a four-year, 0.70-mill levy for fire equipment and a four-year, 1.25-mill levy for trash collection.
In Excelsior Township, Republican Supervisor Norman Groner and Democratic Treasurer Nina Cotton are unopposed to retain their four-year seats. No incumbent is running for clerk, a four-year office. The candidates are Democrats Sandra Goodale and Norma Lance, and Republican Jane Rowell. Democratic Trustee Daniel Prokup will face Republican challengers Bethel Larabee and Richard VanBeek for two, four-year terms. Voters also will be asked to renew a four-year, 1-mill levy for fire and rescue services and a four-year, 0.70-mill levy for fire equipment.
In Garfield Township, Democratic Supervisor Todd Jones is running unopposed for four more years. Republican Clerk Ina Sloat will face challenger Terri Sibole, also a Republican, for the four-year post. Democrat Susan Jones is the sole candidate for the four-year treasurer seat. Republican Trustee Alan Potts and Democratic Trustee Margaret Anne Custer will face Republican challenger Jim Sweet for two, four-year terms.
There are no contested races in Kalkaska Township. Republican Supervisor Michael Winter, Democratic Clerk Connie Winter, Republican Treasurer Margarete Johnston, Democratic Trustee Allen Dimon and Republican Trustee David Wolfe are running unopposed for their four-year seats.
There are no contested races on the all-Republican ballot in Oliver Township. Supervisor Edward Fisher, Clerk Betty Dunham, Treasurer Shirley Fisher and Trustee Carol Tanner are running unopposed to retain their four-year seats. Newcomer Heather Golden is seeking the other trustee seat.
In Orange Township, Republican Supervisor Robert Hoenicke and Democratic Treasurer Julie Lenz are running unopposed to retain their four-year posts. Democratic newcomer Anna Nice is running unopposed for the four-year clerk position. Incumbent Republican trustees Sue Jenkins and LeRoy Smithingell will face challenger Eric Hendricks, also a Republican, for two, four-year terms.
In Rapid River Township, Republican Supervisor Phyllis Senske will face Democratic challenger John Rogers for the four-year office. Republican Clerk Valerie Hansen and Democratic Treasurer Cari Jo Berlin are running unopposed to retain their four-year seats. Incumbent Republican Trustee Randy Buyze will face challengers Lori McKinnon and Terry Williams, also a Republican, for two, four-year terms. Voters also will be asked to approve a four-year, 1-mill levy for trash collection, a four-year, 0.125-mill levy for cleanup services and a four-year, 2-mill levy for road work.
There are no contested races in Springfield Township. Democratic Supervisor Thomas Gray, Clerk Joyce Ingersoll, Treasurer Bonnie Gonyer, Trustee Carl Ingersoll and Republican Trustee Jeremy Birgy all are unopposed to retain their four-year seats.
LEELANAU COUNTY
Uncontested races include Clerk Michelle Crocker, Drain Commissioner Steven Christensen and Prosecutor Joseph Hubbell, all incumbent Republicans seeking four-year terms. Road Commissioner John Popa, a Republican, is unopposed for a six-year term. Register of Deeds Sue Stoffel, a Republican, is running against challenger Susan Boyd, a Democrat, for a four-year term. Republican Mark Walter seeks to unseat Sheriff Michael Oltersdorf, also Republican, for a four-year term. Incumbent Treasurer Vicki Kilway is up against fellow Republican Chelly Roush for a four-year term.
The county commission ballot includes both Republicans and Democrats for two-year terms. In District 1, incumbent Jean Watkoski is up against fellow Republican Jeffery Howell. Klaus Heinert faces fellow Republican James Schaub Sr. for the second-district seat, along with Victor Walter, a Democrat. In District 3, incumbent William Bunek is challenged by fellow Republican Richard Schmuckal and Democrat Jackie Freeman. Mary Tonneberger, a Republican, is unchallenged for re-election to her District 4 seat, as is David Shiflett, a Republican, for his spot in District 5. The District 6 race includes Richard Andersen, William Irwin and Dan Semple, all Republican, as well as David Marshall, a Democrat. In District 7, Republican incumbent Melinda Lautner faces Traci Cruz, a Democrat.
In the 101st District state House race, Republicans Gregory Ferguson, Ray Franz, Janice McCraner and Mike McManus compete for the Republican nomination while Democrat Dan Scripps is unopposed.
All township officials in Leelanau County are elected to four-year terms. In Bingham Township, incumbents are unopposed. Uncontested races include Supervisor Roswell Ard, a Republican; Clerk Peggy Core, a Democrat; and Treasurer Sandra Grant, a Republican. Incumbent Trustee Mary Bush and fellow Republican Marita Grant Somero are up for two trustee spots.
In Centerville Township, incumbent Supervisor Leonard Kelenski, a Democrat, faces no opposition. Patricia Fleis is up against fellow Republican Kenneth Denoyer for the supervisor position. Democrat David Wurm is unopposed for clerk, and incumbent Treasurer Katrina Pleva, a Democrat, is unchallenged for her position. Incumbent trustees Joseph Czernik and James Schwantes are challenged by fellow Democrats Fred Peplinski and George Wellman for two trustee seats.
In Cleveland Township, incumbent Supervisor Timothy Stein, a Republican, is unchallenged. Incumbent Clerk Jan Nemeskal, a Democrat, faces no opposition. Incumbent Treasurer Bessie Musil, a Democrat, faces Taryn Daniels, a Republican. No candidates filed for township trustee. A ballot proposal asks voters whether the county should impose a $29 per household annual fee for recycling collection for three years. Collection would include recyclable materials, household hazardous waste, tires, batteries and electronics.
The Elmwood Township ballot includes 16 candidates. Incumbent Supervisor Derith Smith faces fellow Republicans Jack Kelly and John Naymick, along with Donald Barrows, a Democrat. Incumbent Clerk Connie Preston is up against fellow Republican Diane Hubert, and incumbent Treasurer Debbie Street faces fellow Republican Wendy Barker. Four trustee seats are up for grabs. Incumbent trustees Terry Lautner and Paul Walter are challenged by fellow Republicans Mary Catherine Barrows, David Darga, Nancy Doughty, John J. Richards and Erik Saxon. Democratic candidate Donald Gallagher also is running for trustee.
In Empire Township, the only contested race is for treasurer. Incumbent Supervisor William Bolton, a Republican, has no challengers, and neither does incumbent Clerk Christine Neiswonger, also Republican. Republicans Christopher Martin, Roy Pentilla and Carrlin Waldenmyer are up for treasurer. Cheryl Manning, a Democrat, is unopposed for a treasurer spot on the ballot. Incumbent trustees Phil Deering and Carl Noonan, both Republican, are unchallenged for two seats on the township board.
In Glen Arbor Township, incumbent Supervisor John Soderholm, a Republican, is unopposed. Incumbent Clerk Bonnie Quick, a Republican, and incumbent Treasurer Terry Gretzema, also Republican, have no challengers. Incumbent trustees Kent Kelly and Bill Thompson, both Republican, are up for two trustee spots, as is Democrat Ken Hurlin. The five-member park commission race is uncontested. Candidates include incumbents Gwen Baxter, James Fowler and Rich Quick, all Republicans, incumbent Becky Sutherland, a Democrat, and newcomer Paul Walters, a Republican.
Kasson Township has an all-Republican ballot for the uncontested election. One newcomer, Greg Julian, is up for one of two trustee seats. Seeking re-election are Supervisor Fred Lanham, Clerk Kathlyn Feys, Treasurer Beth Noonan and Trustee Roger Noonan.
In Leelanau Township, only the township board race is contested. Unopposed candidates include Supervisor James Neve, Clerk Deborah Van Pelt and Treasurer Denise Dunn, all Republican. Incumbent trustees Gary Fredrickson and Victor Goldschmidt face fellow Republican Edward Reinsch, as well as Joe Barerra, a Democrat, for two trustee spots. The ballot includes a four-year, 0.46-mill levy to fund the township airport, cemeteries, library, parks and recreation, planning, zoning administrator and other general fund services. A second proposal asks for a 2.2-mill tax to fund fire and emergency medical services for four years.
In Leland Township, incumbent Supervisor Harry Larkin faces fellow Republican Nicholas Lederle. Incumbent Clerk Jane Keen, a Republican, is unchallenged. Newcomers Shirley Garthe and Jennifer Schaub Trudeau, both Republican, are up for township treasurer. Incumbent Trustee Steve Plamondon faces fellow Republican Thomas Aemmer Sr., along with Susan Och, a Democrat, for two seats on the township board.
Solon Township's races all are uncontested. Newcomer James Lautner, a Republican, is up for the supervisor position. Incumbent Clerk Shirley Mikowski and Treasurer Joan Gauthier, both Republicans, are unopposed for their offices. Trustees Robert Dezelski and George Rosinski, both Democrats, are up for two seats on the township board. The ballot includes a two-year, 0.75-mill levy to fund fire and ambulance equipment and operation.
In Suttons Bay Township, Republican incumbents are running in an uncontested election. Candidates include Supervisor Richard Bahle, Clerk Sandra Van Huystee, Treasurer Catherine Herman and Trustee William Drozdalski. No candidates are running for the second trustee seat.
MANISTEE COUNTY
Voters will find contested races for nearly all county offices. Republican Clerk Marilyn Kliber will defend the four-year post from Democratic challenger Mindy Sedelmaier, as will Republican Register of Deeds Penny Pepera from Democratic challenger Kendra Rohdy. Republican Sheriff Dale Kowalkowski seeks to retain his four-year seat against Republican challenger Kathy Fenstermacher, as does Republican Treasurer Russell Pomeroy against Republican challenger Chris Olen. Republican Drain Commissioner Kenneth Berentsen will face Democratic challenger Mark DiBenedetto for the four-year position. The only candidates running unopposed for four-year terms are Republican Prosecutor Ford Stone and Republican newcomer Patrick Bentley for surveyor.
The two-year Board of Commissioners candidates include both incumbents and newcomers. Republican newcomer Kenneth Hilliard is unopposed for the District 1 seat. Incumbent Allen O'Shea will face challenger Sherry Dixon, both Democrats, for the District 2 seat. Democratic incumbent Glenn Lottie will face Republican challenger Dick Stapley in District 3. Republican incumbent Edward Haik will face Democratic challenger Rudolph Milasich for the District 5 seat. The race in District 6 includes two challengers -- Republican Duane Jones and Democrat Jim Krolczyk. Democratic incumbents Ervin Kowalski, of District 4, and Carl Rutske, of District 7, are unopposed.
County voters also will be asked to renew a 1-mill levy for the central dispatch system and a 1-mill operational levy for the library, both through 2012.
In the state House race for the 101st District, Republicans Gregory Ferguson, Ray Franz, Janice McCraner and Mike McManus compete for the Republican nomination while Democrat Dan Scripps is unopposed.
In the 2nd Congressional District primary race, Republican incumbent Peter Hoekstra and Democratic challenger Fred Johnson are both unopposed.
The race for U.S. Senate features incumbent Democrat Carl Levin and Republican challenger Jack Hoogendyk Jr., who are both unopposed.
In Arcadia Township, Republican Clerk Evelyn Wilson and Republican Treasurer Kenneth Messer are unopposed to retain their four-year seats. Supervisor Tom Wass will defend the four-year office from challenger Linda Joy Hawkins, both Republicans. Republican Trustee Greg Wisner will face Republican challenger Michael Cederholm and Democratic challenger Jean Muldavin for two, four-year terms. Voters also will be asked to approve a five-year, 1-mill levy for a new water tanker and other fire department equipment.
Three newcomers are competing for the open supervisor post in Bear Lake Township. Republican challengers Dane Krueger and Jeffrey Randall are vying for the four-year office with Democratic challenger Vern Best. Republican Clerk Deanna Pattison is unopposed to retain the four-year position. Treasurer Donald Shreve will face challenger Julie Griffis, both Republicans, for the four-year seat. Republican newcomer Janette May and Democratic newcomer Bonnie Harnish are vying for two, four-year trustee terms. Voters also will be asked to renew a five-year, 0.5-mill operational levy for fire and rescue services and a five-year, 0.25-mill levy for fire and rescue equipment.
There are no contested races in Brown Township. Democratic Supervisor Ford Wagar, Democratic Clerk Pamela Tompke, Republican Treasurer Cheryl Alice Schaefer, Republican Trustee Jeffrey Westheimer and Democratic Trustee Tim Joseph are unopposed to retain their four-year terms.
There are no contested races in Cleon Township. Democratic Supervisor Jeff Stanton, Democratic Clerk Marlene Wood-Zylstra, Republican Treasurer Linda Cudney and Democratic Trustee Todd Humphrey are unopposed to retain their four-year seats. Republican newcomer Joann Bogus is running for the other trustee term.
There are no challengers on the ballot in Dickson Township. Republican Supervisor Sharon Buning, Republican Clerk Karin Boyer, Republican Treasurer Bertha Asiala and Democratic Trustee Debbie Lott are unopposed to retain their four-year seats. Republican newcomer Koreen MacNeil is running for the other trustee term.
In Filer Township, Democratic Supervisor James Espvik and Republican Clerk Shirley Ball are unopposed to retain their four-year seats. Treasurer Melissa Bauman will face challenger Ruth Skiera, both Democrats, for the four-year office. Republican trustees Dale Kolanowski and Dean Kruse and Democratic trustees Larry Linke and Edward Williams will face Republican challenger Terry Lindeman for four, four-year terms.
All incumbents are running for re-election in Manistee Township. Republican incumbents, including Supervisor John Anderson, Clerk M. Rebecca Dinsen, Treasurer Connie Smith and trustees Dennis Bjorkquist and John Dontz, are vying for four more years. Bjorkquist and Dontz will face Democratic challenger James Schudlich for the two trustee seats.
In Maple Grove Township, Republican Supervisor H. Wayne Beldo will face Republican challenger Louis Lenz Jr. and Democratic challenger Michael Pickle for the four-year office. Clerk Catherine Larsen and Treasurer Cathryn Jezowski, both Republicans, are unopposed to retain their four-year seats. Democratic Trustee Kenneth Kuuttila will face Republican challengers Dennis Hill and Michael Smith and Democratic challenger Shawn Vanderstelt for two, four-year terms.
All incumbents are seeking re-election in Marilla Township. Supervisor Holly Waldo will face challenger Alec Kuuttila, both Democrats, for the four-year position. Democratic Clerk Margaret Rybicki and Republican Treasurer Patricia Ellis are unopposed for their four-year offices. Republican Trustee Merlin Bahr and Democratic Trustee Patricia Taylor face Republican challenger Karen Bingman for two, four-year terms. Voters also will be asked to renew a three-year, 1-mill levy to benefit the township hall and a two-year, 1-mill operational levy for the township, to start in 2010.
All incumbents on the mostly-Democratic ballot are seeking re-election in Norman Township. Supervisor Brook Shafer will face challenger Kevin Schuessler for the four-year post, and Clerk Mary Soule will defend the four-year office from challenger Teresa Van Atter. Treasurer Mary St. John is unopposed for the four-year position. Trustees Rita Crow Curtis and Daniel Gosack will face challengers Richard Mobley and Judith Richards, both Democrats, and Lee Redman, the lone Republican candidate. Voters also will be asked to renew a two-year, 1-mill levy to be used for a new fire and ambulance building and other rescue operations, as well as a two-year, 2-mill levy for the new building and for fire protection services.
There are no contested races on the all-Republican ballot in Onekama Township. Supervisor David Meister, Clerk Helen Mathieu, Treasurer LaVonne Beebe and trustees Roland Clement and James Wisniski all are unopposed to retain their four-year seats.
In Pleasanton Township, Republican Supervisor Fred Alkire will face Republican challenger Tony Merrill and Democratic challenger Bernard Ware Jr. for the four-year office. Republican Clerk Connie Ledford is unopposed for the four-year seat. Treasurer Judy Girven will face challenger Joe Taraskavage, both Republicans, for the four-year position. Republican trustees Robert Babcock and David McNeilly will defend their four-year terms from Republican challenger David Ertel and Democratic challengers Allan Swanson and Gayle Crampton.
In Springdale Township, Supervisor Marilyn Moore Green, Clerk Donna Humphrey-Kirbach and Treasurer Richard Hitchingham, all Democrats, are unopposed to retain their four-year seats. No incumbents are running for the two, four-year trustee terms. Newcomers Judy Wallace Wheelock, a Republican, and Democrat Cynthia Moore are vying for the spots.
In Stronach Township, Supervisor Walter Froncek will face challenger Robert Sell, both Democrats, for the four-year post. Democratic Clerk Donna Jados is unopposed for the four-year seat. Treasurer Jean Hafer will face challenger Melissa Guenthardt, both Democrats, for the four-year office. Democratic Trustee Rick Gerber will face Republican challengers Gary Lindeman and Kody Mikula and Democratic challengers Phillip Landis and Philip Vadeboncoeur for two, four-year terms.
MISSAUKEE COUNTY
Voters in Missaukee County will face a Republican ballot full of incumbents running unopposed for additional four-year terms, including Sheriff James Bosscher, Prosecutor William Donnelly, Clerk-Register Carolyn Flore and Treasurer Barbara Hancock. Incumbent Road Commissioner Lonny Lutke also is running unopposed as a Republican for an additional six-year term.
Incumbent county commissioners Lan Bridson, Susan Rogers, Dean Vivian and Hubert Zuiderveen are unopposed as Republicans for additional two-year terms. Incumbent Republican Brian Whipple seeks another two-year term, a position also sought by Democratic challenger Richard Renner. Also, incumbent Star Hughston is challenged by two fellow Republicans, Robert Clark and Don Shaarda. There is no candidate for the open seat in District 3.
Voters within Houghton Lake Community Schools will be asked to consider a proposed bonding proposal to borrow $7.15 million to remodel the school and buy equipment and school buses, plus improve outdoor athletic facilities and playing fields. In the 4th Congressional District primary race Republican incumbent Dave Camp and Democratic challenger Andrew Concannon are both unopposed.
The race for U.S. Senate features incumbent Democrat Carl Levin and Republican challenger Jack Hoogendyk Jr. who are both unopposed.
Five incumbent Aetna Township officials are running unopposed for additional four-year terms, all on the Republican ballot. They include Supervisor Ronald Huttenga, Clerk Marietta "Rita" Tucker, Treasurer Mark Jenema and trustees Keith Dick and Mary Schoo. Township officials also seek voter approval of a four-year tax renewal at a rate of 2 mills for road construction and maintenance. The tax would generate an estimated $37,500 in 2008 if approved.
All five incumbent Bloomfield Township officials are running unopposed for additional four-year terms, four as Republicans and one as a Democrat. They include Supervisor Kellard Powell, Clerk Laura Muste, Treasurer Patricia Powell and trustees Sally Gill and Ted Peasley. Peasley is the lone Democrat. Township officials also seek voter approval of a four-year tax renewal at a rate of 1 mill for road reconstruction and bridge replacement work. The levy would raise an estimated $17,325 in 2009 if approved.
Voters in Butterfield Township will choose from among the five incumbent township officials running unopposed for re-election to additional four-year terms, all as Republicans. They include Supervisor Thomas Bowman, Clerk Marilyn Myers, Treasurer Carrie Creger and trustees Alice Chrispell and Daniel Elsholz. Township officials also seek voter approval of a four-year tax renewal at a rate of 1 mill for road construction and maintenance. The tax would generate an estimated $18,917 in 2008 if approved. Voters also will decide on a proposed fire protection tax renewal at a rate of 1.5 mills for four years. The levy would raise an estimated $28,375 in 2008 if approved.
There are three candidates for supervisor in Caldwell Township, including two Republican newcomers and the Democratic incumbent. Republicans Michael Lutke and Dennis Ruell will run for the four-year position, which incumbent Democrat Daniel Mills also seeks. Four other Republican candidates do not face opposition, including newcomer Gordon Haver, who is running for trustee, along with three incumbents. They include Clerk Shelley Sloat, Treasurer Elna Brachel and Trustee Gordon Brown.
Five incumbent Clam Union Township officials are unopposed for re-election to additional four-year terms. They include Supervisor Bradley VanHaitsma, Clerk Steven Ebels, Treasurer Terry Lutke and trustees Bernard Brinks and Judy Jenema. Township officials seek voter approval of a four-year tax renewal at a rate of 1 mill for road construction and maintenance. The tax would raise an estimated $28,090 in 2008 if approved.
One Democrat and four Republican incumbents will appear on the ballot for Enterprise Township, without any challengers. They include Supervisor Stephen Howey Jr., Clerk Karen Pope, Treasurer Carla Baumgardner and trustees Cindy Howitt and Anita Londak. Londak is the sole Democrat.
Six incumbents and one newcomer are unopposed for four-year terms in Forest Township. Supervisor Eugene Pitts, Treasurer Susie Jones, Trustee Clifford Curtis and newcomer constable candidate Edwards Jones are all running as Democrats. Clerk Catherine Molitor, Trustee Geraldine McGee and Constable Raymond Moore are running as Republicans. Township officials seek voter approval of a four-year tax renewal at a rate of 1 mill for the maintenance and construction of roads. The levy would generate an estimated $27,000 in 2009 if approved.
Voters in Holland Township will choose from five incumbent Republicans unopposed for additional four-year terms. They include Supervisor Donald Byrne, Clerk Donna Bode, Treasurer Madeline Hunter and trustees Peter Heliste and Edith Pearson.
There will be six Republican candidates on the ballot in Lake Township, including five incumbents and one challenger for trustee. Supervisor Thomas Duddles, Clerk Kay Ouwinga, Treasurer Jan DelBello and trustees Kevin Gill and Edward Olson all seek additional four-year terms. Newcomer Robert Hall also seeks one of the two trustee positions.
Four incumbents are running for re-election to additional four-year terms in Norwich Township, along with two new candidates for trustee. Supervisor Penny Blair and Treasurer Terrie Wiggins are unopposed as Democrats, while Clerk Lois Whipple is unopposed as a Republican. Incumbent Trustee Dennis McCoy seeks another term as a Republican and will share the ballot with newcomer John Martin for trustee. Democratic candidate Susan Lehr also seeks a four-year seat as trustee. Township officials seek voter approval of a four-year fire protection millage at a rate of 1 mill. The tax would generate an estimated $26,686 in 2008 if approved.
There is a race between two Republicans for the four-year clerk position in Pioneer Township. Incumbent Pauline Hose is challenged by Jessie Peterson. Otherwise, the remaining Republican incumbents are running unopposed for re-election to additional four-year terms, including Supervisor Arleen Hutchinson, Treasurer Anna Crane and Trustee Carol Chaffee. One trustee position has no candidate.
Five incumbent Republicans are unopposed for re-election to additional four-year terms in Reeder Township. They include Supervisor Daniel Gallop, Clerk Roger Jenema, Treasurer Aldyne Ebels and trustees Keith Ebels and George Higgins.
Voters in Richland Township will choose from among five incumbent Republicans, all unopposed for re-election to additional four-year terms. They include Supervisor Karlene Paffhouse, Clerk Julie Dick, Treasurer Darla Kars and trustees Randall Schierbeek and Daniel Lachonce.
Just one newcomer candidate is running unchallenged for four years as supervisor in Riverside Township, along with four unopposed incumbents seeking additional four-year terms. Candidate David Rozeveld seeks the supervisor post, while Clerk Mildred Rozeveld, Treasurer Morris Dieterman and trustees Barbara Henrickson and Ted Westdorp seek another term. All candidates are on the Republican ticket. Township officials also seek voter approval of a four-year levy at a rate of 1 mill for the reconstruction and maintenance of roads and bridges. The tax would raise an estimated $30,000 in 2008 if approved.
Five incumbents are running unopposed for re-election to additional four-year terms in West Branch Township. They include Supervisor Cindy Wagner and Trustee Norma McDaniel on the Republican ballot, along with Clerk Penny Aldrich, Treasurer Karrie Loney and Trustee Jeannie Wilton on the Democratic ballot.
OTSEGO COUNTY
Incumbent Sheriff Jim McBride is challenged by fellow Republican Kam Ensing for a four-year term, while Democratic candidate Mike Anthony also seeks the sheriff's post. Incumbent Clerk Susan DeFeyter is running as a Republican for re-election to another four-year term and is challenged by fellow Republican Susan Skoglund.
Several county officials are unopposed for re-election to four-year terms, including Prosecutor Kyle Legel, Treasurer Diann Axford and Surveyor Ronald Brand, all Republicans. Only one incumbent road commission member is seeking re-election to one of three open six-year terms, Republican Donald Huff. The other two candidates are Republican William Holewinski and Democrat Randy Samkowiak.
Several of the two-year seats on the Board of Commissioners are contested and every incumbent and new candidate is a Republican. Incumbent Clark Bates is challenged by Wayne Brown, incumbent Paul Beachnau is challenged by Vic Ouellette and incumbent Mike Hyde is challenged by Angela McKnight. Incumbents Paul Liss, Erma Backenstose, Kenneth Glasser and Douglas Johnson are unopposed, as are newcomers Robert Harkness and Bruce Brown.
Officials seek voter approval of a proposed six-year 0.4-mill tax to provide funds for the maintenance and operation of the library, from 2009 through 2014. The tax would raise an estimated $471,404 in the first year if approved.
In the 105th District state House race Republican incumbent Kevin Elsenheimer and Democratic challeger Connie Saltonstall are unopposed.
The 1st Congressional District primary race features a battle between Republican hopefuls Tom Casperson, Don Hooper and Linda Goldthorpe for the right to face incumbent Democrat Bart Stupak in November.
The race for U.S. Senate features incumbent Democrat Carl Levin and Republican challenger Jack Hoogendyk Jr. who are unopposed.
Vanderbilt Area Schools officials seek voter approval of a proposed four-year tax of 1 mill, to create a sinking fund for the construction or repair of school buildings. The tax would raise an estimated $60,000 in 2008 if approved.
Three incumbent Bagley Township officials are unopposed as Republicans for re-election to four-year terms, including Supervisor Bill Giles, Clerk James E. Szymanski and Treasurer Mary Yager. There also are two open four-year trustee positions and three candidates in the race, including incumbents Fred Burns and Richard Sumerix and newcomer Thomas Roach, all Republicans.
Three incumbent Charlton Township officials are unopposed as Republicans for re-election to four-year terms, including Supervisor Matthew Nowak, Clerk Ivan Maschke and Treasurer Kimberly Samkowiak. There also are two open four-year trustee positions and three candidates in the race, including incumbents Joseph Edwartkowski and Michael McCarthy and newcomer Keith Huff, all Republicans.
There are three newcomer Republican candidates for Chester Township supervisor, a four-year position, including Scott Courterier, LouAnn Olsen and Michael Smith. Otherwise, all other incumbents are unopposed for additional four-year terms, including Clerk Melissa Szymanski, Treasurer Barbara Lewandowski and Trustee Jean Nowicki, all Republicans, plus Trustee Wanda Basinski, a Democrat.
In Corwith Township, there is just one newcomer candidate on the August ballot for a four-year term as supervisor, Republican Hugo Andrew Noeske. Incumbent Clerk Debbie Whitman is unopposed as a Democrat for another four-year term, while the other races have multiple candidates. Incumbent Treasurer Marilyn Cole is running as a Democrat for another four-year term, a position that also is sought by Republican candidate Patrick Coultes. Also, incumbent trustees Fred Gorny and Thomas Loshaw are challenged by Darrol Miller in the all-Republican race for two open four-year terms. The township also seeks voter approval of a proposed five-year levy of a 2-mill tax to fund capital improvements and operational expenses at the Vanderbilt/Corwith Fire and Rescue Department from 2009 through 2013. The millage renewal expires in December and the tax would raise an estimated $140,277 in 2009 if approved.
Four incumbents seek re-election to four-year terms in Dover Township, while one open trustee seat will remain empty. There are no challengers. Supervisor Thomas Murphy and Treasurer Diane House, both Republicans, are running along with Clerk Janet Kwapis and Trustee Rebecca House, both Democrats.
Five incumbents are running for re-election in Elmira Township and none face challengers. Supervisor Diane Franckowiak, Clerk Susan Schaedig, Treasurer Diane Purgiel and Trustee Leonard Skop all seek additional four-year terms as Republicans, while Trustee Theresa Plachta seeks another term as a Democrat.
Four incumbents and one newcomer are unopposed for five positions in Hayes Township. Supervisor Mary Sanders, Clerk Richard Ross, Treasurer Wayne Tyler and Trustee Robert Diesing all seek additional four-year terms as Republicans, while challenger Daniel Wagar is unopposed as a Republican.
Two challengers will face incumbent Livingston Township Clerk Elizabeth Mench in the Republican primary election for the four-year position, including Mary Wilkinson and Steven Dipzinski. All other incumbents are unopposed for their four-year spots, including Supervisor Norman Brecheisen, Treasurer Cheryl Prusakiewicz and trustees Beth Dipzinski and Richard Carlson, all Republicans.
Four incumbents in Otsego Lake Township are unopposed for re-election to their four-year seats, including Clerk Lorraine Markovich, Constable Jerry Brown and trustees Mary Brown and Tim Baker, all Republicans. There is a race between incumbent Supervisor Thomas Wager and challenger Margaret Black for the four-year term and both are Republicans. Also, there are four Republicans running for treasurer, including the appointed incumbent, Christine Wohlfeil, plus Laura Boerema, Christie Jacobs and Susan Oliverson.
WEXFORD COUNTY
The county races feature an all-Republican ballot and no opposition. Drain Commissioner Michael Solomon, Prosecutor Mark Smathers, Register of Deeds Lorie Sorensen-Smith, Treasurer Wendy Moore, Clerk Elaine Richardson and Sheriff Gary Finstrom are uncontested to retain their four-year seats. Newcomer Craig Pullen is the sole candidate for surveyor.
The all-Republican ticket also extends to the two-year Board of Commissioners race. Incumbent Thomas Akers of District 1 faces challenger Kevin Heitger. Incumbent Leslie Housler is unopposed for the District 2 seat. Incumbent Jerry Bulock will face challenger Michael Reilly in District 3. Incumbent Larry Copley is unopposed for his District 4 seat. Incumbent John Saari and challenger Michael Haner will square off for the open Di strict 5 seat. In District 6, incumbent Michael Stump will face challenger Bruce Bailey. Incumbents Marie Rabun of District 7 and Sarah McKeever of District 8 are unopposed, as is newcomer Terry Beck of District 9.
Voters will be asked to renew a three-year, 0.4-mill levy for senior citizen services.
In 102nd District state House race, Republican incumbent Darwin Booher of Evart and Democrat Nate Heffron of Cadillac are both unopposed.
In the 2nd Congressional District primary race, Republican incumbent Peter Hoekstra and Democratic challenger Fred Johnson are both unopposed.
The race for U.S. Senate features incumbent Democrat Carl Levin and Republican challenger Jack Hoogendyk Jr., who are both unopposed.
On the all-Republican Antioch Township ballot, Supervisor Thomas Williams, Clerk James Priddle, Treasurer Ellen Gardner and Trustee Barbara Barnes are unopposed for four-year seats. Newcomer Randy Lycka is running for the other trustee term. Voters will be asked to approve a four-year, 0.75-mill levy for ambulance services from the Mesick Rescue Squad.
No one is running for supervisor in Boon Township, and only one trustee seat is available. Democratic newcomer April Porter is unopposed for the four-year seat. Republican Clerk Alice Finnerty and Republican Treasurer Jacqueline Willis are unopposed for their four-year posts. Voters will be asked to renew a four-year, 1-mill levy for fire protection services.
In Cedar Creek Township, all candidates are Republican and all positions have four-year terms. Challengers Larry Paquette and Larry Rogers are running for the open supervisor seat. Clerk Pat Buttermore will defend the office from challenger Wendy Johnson. Treasurer Mary Hallett is unopposed for the position. Incumbent trustees Keith Stutzman and Jean Schnitker will face challenger John Fuscone for two spots on the board.
There are no contested races in Cherry Grove Township. Supervisor G. Ronald Vaughan, Clerk James Barton, Treasurer Kari Shankland and trustees Margaret Peters and Robert Soneral, all Republicans, are unopposed to retain their four-year seats.
Clam Lake Township Supervisor Darrell Kelley, Clerk Delores Peterson and Treasurer Larry Payne, all Republicans, are unopposed to retain their four-year positions. Incumbent trustees James Houston and David Mackey will face challengers Deb Nederhoed and Dennis Anderson, all Republicans, for two, four-year terms. Voters also will be asked to approve the transfer of three parcels of land from the township to the city of Cadillac.
There are no contested races on the all-Republican ballot in Colfax Township. Newcomer Dallas Wood is running for supervisor. Clerk Rebecca Stoddard, Treasurer Janet Tidey and trustees Jay Roundhouse and Linda Costello are seeking four more years in their posts.
In Greenwood Township, Republican Supervisor Rex Swinehart and Democratic Treasurer Jolene Kukuk are seeking re-election to their four-year posts. No one is running for clerk. Republican Sherry Thompson and Democrats Margaret Veenstra and Thelma Paul are running for two, four-year trustee seats.
There are no contested races in Hanover Township. Democratic Supervisor Peter Hansen, Democratic Clerk Terri Schichtel, Republican Treasurer Carrie Schichtel, Democratic Trustee Vernon Hewer and Republican Trustee Richard DeClaire all are seeking four more years. Voters also will be asked to approve a four-year, 0.75-mill levy for the Buckley and Mesick rescue squads to provide ambulance service to the township.
In Haring Township, Republican Treasurer Elizabeth McCain is the only candidate unopposed to retain the four-year seat. Supervisor Robert Scarbrough and challenger Terry Harvey, both Republicans, are running for the four-year post. Republican Clerk Andrea Hofstra will defend her four-year office from Republican challengers Vicki Huffman and Kirk Soule. Republican trustees Daniel Wilkinson and Anita Louise Fagerman will face newcomer Shelia Hill for four, four-year terms.
There are no contested races in Henderson Township. Republican newcomer Gerald Sours is running for supervisor. Republican Clerk Linda Sours, Republican Treasurer Julie Hoag, Republican Trustee Maria Christine Toupin and Democratic trustee newcomer Karen Mackenroth are unopposed for four-year terms. Voters also will be asked to approve a four-year, 1-mill operational levy for fire protection and rescue services.
There are no contested races on the all-Republican ballot in Liberty Township. Supervisor Lloyd Butcher, Clerk Marjorie Bogart, Treasurer Cynthia Deibert and trustees Dona Longstreet and James Heady Sr. are unopposed for four-year terms.
In Selma Township, Republican Supervisor David DeForest, Republican Clerk Vicki Flory, Democratic Treasurer Sara Jean Hettich and Democratic Trustee Elna Kruley are unopposed for four-year terms.
In Slagle Township, Republican Supervisor Leo Porter, Republican Clerk Arvid Mannor and Democratic trustees Wilma Gaylord and Barbara Wilson are unopposed to retain their four-year seats. Democratic Treasurer Delma Staffin will face Republican challenger Cynthia Flynn for the four-year post.
The all-Republican ballot in South Branch Township includes Supervisor William Bradfield and Clerk Julie Cieslak unopposed to retain their four-year positions. Treasurer Donna Taylor will face challenger Janet Shettler for the four-year office. Trustee Willard Evens is running with newcomer Ken Thomas for two, four-year terms. Voters also will be asked to renew a four-year, 2-mill levy for fire protection services and a four-year, 1-mill levy for fire equipment.
In Springville Township, all incumbents are unopposed to retain their four-year seats, including Democratic Supervisor Clyde Kastl, Republican Clerk Sharon Ream, Republican Treasurer Geraldine Kastl and Republican trustees Mickey Sparks and Beverly Walton. Voters also will be asked to approve a four-year, 0.75-mill levy for the Mesick Rescue Squad to provide ambulance service to the township.
In Wexford Township, Democratic Supervisor David Williams is unopposed to retain the four-year seat. Republican Clerk James Linna will defend the four-year office from Republican challenger Teresa Hankins. Republican challengers Lynda Mannor and Suzique Couture are running for treasurer. Republican trustees Robert Kellogg and Gary Emery will face Republican challengers Annette Hansen and Benedict Fleis for two, four-year terms. Voters also will be asked to approve a four-year, 0.75-mill levy for the Buckley and Mesick rescue squads to provide ambulance service to the township.
