TRAVERSE CITY — Tom Menzel, who overhauled the National Cherry Festival to bring more financial stability to the city's signature summer event, is stepping down as its executive director.
Menzel confirmed today that he will leave the festival when his contract expires Nov. 1. Menzel was hired in February 2006 to replace former director Tom Kern, and this month completed his third festival.
"I said when I was hired I was in it for three years, and I think it's important to stick to that," said Menzel, adding that it's time for some "fresh eyes" to take over.
"I think change is good and healthy for an organization," he said.
Menzel, who turns 64 next week, implemented several operational changes during his tenure. Those included scaling down the festival's governing board, selling its former headquarters building on Sixth Street and establishing a nonprofit organization to raise money for scholarships and other functions.
"I think we have a good foundation," Menzel said. "I think our reputation has improved, and I think we've re-connected with the community."
