TRAVERSE CITY — Elk Rapids Schools Superintendent Jon Hoover will leave his post, effective Aug. 31.

Hoover, 54, on Monday announced plans to retire during a school board meeting, and cited a desire to spend time with family.

He drafted a letter that was sent to all employees and board members.

A 1973 Elk Rapids High School graduate, Hoover has been the district's superintendent since June 2000. He also worked as an elementary teacher and principal, as well as superintendent of Littlefield Public Schools in Alanson.

He also worked as an adjunct instructor for Central Michigan University at the University Center in Traverse City, teaching a master's degree course on being a school principal.

Board members have not yet formed plans to search for Hoover's replacement, board President Martha McGuire said, but the hope is to hire someone before school resumes in September.
