Off-duty deputy killed in crash

GAYLORD -- An off-duty Ogemaw County sheriff's deputy died in a rollover crash south of Gaylord.

Emergency responders were called around 8 a.m. Wednesday to the scene of a one-vehicle accident on Old 27 South near Mancelona Road in Otsego County's Otsego Lake Township. The victim was Michael Girard, 47, of Frederic, according to Michigan State Police.

Girard was the only occupant of the vehicle. The crash remains under investigation, police said.

Girard was a deputy for the Ogemaw County Sheriff's Office for nearly eight years, said Undersheriff Doug Casselman.
