Northern Notes: Teens thanked for integrity

By STEPHANIE BEACH
Local columnist

Barbara Bee, of Traverse City, would like to thank the two young teens who found and returned her purse and wallet to her on May 20.

Barbara was out and about and doesn't know where she lost her purse. She hadn't even realized it was missing until the boys came to the door and told her husband they had found her purse.

"I only regret I wasn't there to thank them personally," Barbara wrote. "So now I am thanking them with much gratitude for their integrity and honesty. I don't know their names, but want them to know how proud I am of them."

American Legion Bowen-Holliday Post #35 and Auxiliary recently held its annual "Poppy Days." The poppies are made by veterans in veterans hospitals and all proceeds are used to help service personnel, veterans and/or their families.

Lillian Couturier, Auxiliary secretary, wrote on behalf of the Legion and Auxiliary to thank the many business locations for their cooperation and the public for their generous support of the fundraiser.

Requests for help at the Father Fred Foundation have increased dramatically since the economic downturn, but two recent fundraisers helped tremendously.

The Traverse Trail Travelers' Roger Dumortier Memorial Snowmobile Ride resulted in $400 in cash and hundreds of non-perishable items being presented to foundation Executive Director Martie Manty. The late Dumortier was a trail travelers' member and snowmobile enthusiast. His favorite charity was the foundation.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians and 350 guests made the 14th annual Cigar Dinner for the Father Fred Foundation a huge success and generated a net of more than $75,000 from admissions, match donations and auction item sales. The funds will help families in crisis who are struggling with utility shut off.

David Abeel, director of development at the Foundation, would like to thank organizers Tim Smith at Smith Johnson Attorneys, Mike Nolan at Nolan's Tobacconists, Richard P. Carroll PLC, and Wine Master Matt Sutherland for the tremendous number of hours they put in to make the event so successful.

Thanks also go to major sponsors Ashton Cigar Company and Dan Kelly at the Williamsburg Banquet Center. Major support also came from National City Bank, Kirk Kilbourne at Stifel, Nicholas and Co., Patrick and Mary Kelly, Dennis Brodeur and Trevis Gillow, of Raymond James, Patrick Wicksall and Wicksall Distributing, and Zirnhelt & Bowron, Attorneys PLC.

Dinner guests gave a rousing ovation to the dinner's executive chef David Denison of Amical, and other chefs who gave of their time and expertise including Dan Marsh/Red Ginger, Ted Cizma/Aerie, Eric Nittolo/The Boathouse, Randy Chamberlain/BLU, Mickey Cannon/Tuscan Bistro, Phil Murray/Phil's on Front, Myles Anton/Stella, Jon Eakes/Poppycocks, Keil Moshier/Amical and Bay Bread Company for the breads. Other contributors were Paul Olson/Bowers Harbor Inn, Karl Malin/TBA Culinary Program, and Catch Island Grill.

"The meal, the wine, the cigars, the food, the beer and bourbon and vodka ... all were the best of the best," Abeel said.
