Park service seeking input on assessment

It's available for public review

FROM STAFF REPORTS

EMPIRE -- The National Park Service at Sleeping Bear Dunes seeks public opinion on the newly announced Lake Michigan Overlooks Environment Assessment.

The assessment suggests ways the Park Service can reduce hazards and erosion while keeping maintenance costs at a minimum on the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive.

The document will be available for review until July 6 on the National Lakeshore's Web site at www.nps.gov/slbe or at the National Lakeshore Visitor Center in Empire, the offices of Empire and Glen Arbor and the Glen Lake Community Library, Benzie Shores District Library, Darcy Library of Beulah, Leelanau Township Library, Leland Township Library, Suttons Bay Bingham District Library and Traverse City District Library.

Lakeshore officials will host an open house on the assessment on June 17, at the Visitor Center auditorium in Empire from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive attracts more than 200,000 visitors to a 450-foot bluff with views of Glen Lake, the Sleeping Bear Dunes and both Manitou islands. The Environmental Assessment suggests alternative approaches to combat erosion on the path and the bluff due to intense foot traffic and blowing sand.

Comments can be sent electronically through a link on the Web site and by mail addressed to Superintendent, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, 9922 Front Street, Empire, MI 49630. For more information, call the National Lakeshore headquarters at 326-5134.
