Former worker faces embezzlement charge

BELLAIRE A former employee of Shanty Creek Resorts is charged with embezzlement.

Joanna Lynn Smith, 43, of Mancelona, is charged with embezzlement of between $1,000 and $20,000 by an agent or a trustee. She surrendered to the Antrim County Sheriff's Department Thursday, according to a department release.

Smith, a front desk manager at the resort, resigned shortly after police began questioning her, said Jon Stultz, Shanty Creek spokesman. Employees discovered money missing from a safe in early March, and the investigation allegedly led to Smith, the release states.

Smith has been arraigned and is free on bond. A preliminary examination is set for June 12.
