This year's contest was open to all junior and senior high students in the five-county region. The club received 285 student-submitted essays. Students were offered a choice of three questions to answer.

The top three prizes were $2,000 for first place, $1,250 for second place and $750 for third place. In addition, seven students received $50 as honorable mentions.

Taking the top prize was Haley Kossek, a junior at Elk Rapids who answered the question: "How can the education system be improved given the economic challenges facing your generation?"

Kimberly Ramsey, a senior at TC Central, earned second place for addressing the question: "What tax policy is best for our country?"

Third place went to Kristen Seymour, a senior at St. Francis High School. She answered the question: "Is global warming going to help or hinder economic progress?"
