Officials to burn fields at Sleeping Bear

EMPIRE -- Officials at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will burn three fields near Port Oneida Road this month.

Using fire management guidelines, park personnel will burn about 66 acres of fields off Port Oneida Road between Lane and Baker roads this month to reduce the threat of wildfires and maintain wildlife habitat, officials said in a statement.

Area residents are encouraged to close windows and doors and stay inside when smoke is present, the statement read.
