Record-Eagle wins awards

TRAVERSE CITY — Record-Eagle journalists claimed a host of awards in three recent national and state contests.

The newspaper last week won nine awards in the Michigan AP Editorial Association contest for newspapers with paid circulation ranging from 15,001 to 50,000, equaling its total in last year's AP competition. Winners included:

Traverse City Record-Eagle webmaster Jeanne Hubbard, first place for best newspaper Web site, www.record-eagle.com.

Photojournalist Douglas Tesner, first place in feature pictures.

Staff writer Victor Skinner, second place in the breaking news category for coverage of U.S. Marshals' eviction of a Leelanau County woman from her home in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Editorial page editor Dave Miller, second place for editorial writing.

Business editor Bill O'Brien, second place in the news columns category.

Staff writer Sheri McWhirter, third place in the features category for a package on the Mackinac Bridge's 50th anniversary.

Staff writer Melissa Domsic and former sports writer Jeff Peek, third place for sports coverage of Traverse City St. Francis' loss in the state high school football finals.

Community news editor Garret Leiva, third place in the news columns category.

Photojournalist Tyler Sipe, third place in photo stories.

The Record-Eagle also recently won six awards in an annual national journalism contest sponsored by Suburban Newspapers of America. Winners included:

News editor Mike Tyree, second place, best editorial writing.

Features department, second place, best young people's coverage for "Generation Why."

Photojournalist Douglas Tesner, third place, best sports photo.

Features editor Kathy Gibbons, honorable mention, best feature series.

Photojournalist Jan-Michael Stump, honorable mention, best photojournalism.

Sports department, honorable mention, best sports section.

Finally, the Record-Eagle received three awards in an annual company-wide contest sponsored by Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc., owner of the Record-Eagle.

In the 12,000 paid circulation and above category, the Record-Eagle received second place honors for newspaper of the year; business editor Bill O'Brien received a second place award for columnist of the year; and editorial page editor Dave Miller received a second place award for editorial writer of the year.
