Unsigned statement from Meijer's regarding illegal campaign financing

"In late 2007, issues were brought to light surrounding potential state campaign law violations by Meijer associated with its project in Acme Township. Once these issues were brought to the attention of senior management, Meijer notified the Department of State that the company would launch a comprehensive investigation to determine the facts. Meijer hired a campaign finance authority, John Pirich of the Honigman Miller law firm, to conduct the investigation.

"Mr. Pirich has completed his comprehensive review of the facts surrounding Meijer's involvement in elections in Acme Township.

"Mr. Pirich concluded that there were actions by Meijer that likely violated campaign finance and reporting laws:

"Meijer may have violated the Michigan Campaign Finance Act in relation to efforts surrounding a 2005 referendum election to overturn a moratorium on the development of "big box superstores" in Acme Township.

"Meijer also potentially violated the Michigan Campaign Finance Act by providing corporate funds to support a recall election of Township officials held in 2007.

"On February 4, Mr. Pirich, on behalf of Meijer, submitted correspondence to the Bureau of Elections, identifying these conclusions, and noting that he was given unfettered access to all relevant information, and had full cooperation of all Meijer personnel during his investigation. Meijer now stands ready to supply all supporting documents to state officials and will continue to fully cooperate with their investigation. Meijer will comply with any and all direction, penalties, fines or other actions required by the Department of State.

"We are troubled and concerned by what has occurred. Meijer accepts full responsibility and we apologize for the violation of trust these actions caused. In the coming weeks, we will complete our internal review of personnel and organizational issues. As appropriate, personnel actions will be taken, and additional internal measures will be adopted.

"We value the partnerships we have had with many communities throughout Michigan over the past 75 years. These relationships have been built on trust and loyalty. We pledge to take the necessary steps to restore and grow that trust again."
