TRAVERSE CITY -- Harsh, sub-zero cold will arrive this morning and stick around all week, forecasters say.
"It will probably be the coldest air mass we've seen so far this winter," said Mike Boguth, meteorologist at the National Weather Service. "This week is going to be bitter."
Temperatures will barely make it out of single digits today, with a wind chill factor causing the air to feel like it's between 10 and 15 degrees below zero. Add a couple inches of snowfall and 25 mph wind gusts for blowing and drifting snow, Boguth said.
Low overnight temperatures will be as much as 10 degrees below zero for inland areas and a few degrees below zero in Traverse City, he said.
Wednesday will bring another couple inches of snow for Traverse City, where temperatures will not climb from the single digits, Boguth said.
Thursday and Friday will make up an extended lake effect snow period across the region, again with high temperatures in the single digits. Between three and five inches of snow accumulation should happen between those two days, Boguth said.
Temperatures will climb to the teens on Saturday and into the 20s on Sunday, both days still well-below freezing. Next week could bring temperatures nearing 30 degrees, although it's a little early to tell, Boguth said.
