We can do better

I am not one to applaud politicians, but it is about time we let our city commissioners know we appreciate the sacrifices they make every day for our benefit. The truth is that they are not politicians, just ordinary people like you and me trying their best to do a good job.

Lately I have been disturbed by the statements and actions of some people attending commission meetings. Attempting to influence commissioners' decisions by such tactics as packing the seating area, waving signs, exploiting small children during a presentation, threatening commissioners with recall or referendums or worse, singling out individual commissioners for criticism and verbal abuse, using defamatory comments such as "shame on you" and other similar statements are wrong.

These practices have no place in Traverse City. Surely we can do better than that.
