Don't have to be GOP

Why Democrats could vote Republican: For gun rights? For less taxation? Against abortions on demand? For personal rights/responsibilities? For less government regulations? For less taxation? For less spending? For a balanced budget? For a budget? For voter identification? For border security?

You don't have to be a Republican to vote Republican.

Some kids ready at 4

As a retired career teacher and mother, I am concerned about the law that would move up the date to Sept. 1 to enter kindergarten. Education is not "one size fits all" and because of the educational emphasis on the individual child, people ought to realize that some very bright children are ready for school at age 4. Provision must be made to test a child for kindergarten at his parents' request.

When my son was born in 1966, his birth date was within the dates to go to kindergarten in our Ohio community. Four years later, because a school board had changed the kindergarten date, his birthday was 13 days outside the limits. His father and I wanted to have him tested. The tests showed that his IQ was very high, and his social skills were those of a 10-year-old. He started school when he was 4, graduated from high school at 17, college at 21, and graduate school at 23.

Such a child should not be held back one extra year of school because his birthday is outside the range of kindergarten admission.

The law must allow a child to prove that he is ready for kindergarten.
