Rebuild schools first

Why do we need a new performing arts center? I understand the current auditorium has systems that need updating.

They say we need a large auditorium which will hold 1,200 people "for all of TCAPS." We have a great auditorium at West Senior High School, one which all of Traverse City Area Public Schools could use now.

Apparently it doesn't hold 1,200 people, but it has up-to-date power sources, a good sound system, powered curtains, etc.

If we build this center "for all of TCAPS," what will become of the West auditorium?

I understand the need to renovate old buildings. I know that they were designed for and with the technologies of 30, 40 and more years ago. Upgrading them makes sense to me.

But a performing arts center? The projected cost is almost as much as rebuilding the three elementary schools.

Work on the center and one school would begin next June, putting off the reconstruction of the other two schools for yet another two years or more.

Let's get the buildings, which are used to prepare the foundation of our children's education, reconstructed before we put money, which we can't afford now, into a performing arts center.
