Should cut its losses

The Clinch Park splash pad debacle is what happens when a firm that is not qualified to perform engineering tasks is hired to do just that. Wastewater, domestic water and stormwater engineering is not in Hamilton Anderson’s list of “multiple disciplines.” Why wasn’t a qualified local civil engineering firm hired to do this task?

On top of the sewage getting into the feature’s reservoir, we learn that the site was not graded properly and stormwater collects on the splash pad. Then there is the flooding of the tunnel under Grandview Parkway during a storm event.

Traverse City should cut its losses at this point. Forget paying a water park specialist thousands of dollars to look at this. Use the money to demolish the embarrassment and replace the splash pads with green space and a couple of picnic tables. That will open up a lot of impervious area to help with the drainage issues.
