Won’t help them read

Michigan House Bill 5111 will require that all public school students beginning in the 2014-2015 school year who do not pass third-grade reading standards as measured by the MEAP assessment test will be retained until they are able to pass it.

Let’s be clear about this. This means that if your child does not pass a standardized reading test he or she will have to repeat all of third grade until he or she is proficient on the reading portion of the MEAP test. Your child will have to suffer the embarrassment of being held back and have to repeat all the subjects of third grade even if your child excels in other areas such as math and science. No exceptions, no parent input required.

Educational research does not support retention. Research does support effective reading strategies and instruction within the school environment and at home. An effective strategy at school and home is where our attention needs to be. HB 5111 will punish our children rather than focus on how to help them read.
