Can be more equal

Kathleen Parker's column of Oct. 12, "The year of the Women?" assumes that all American women have achieved the first hurdle — gender.

Women who have access to control over their gender-related health issues are in a position to be more equal with men to pursue the freedom to "worry about national security and the nation's image abroad" on the same level as male Americans.

Before women can be on the same "American" level, they must attain control of their own biological self.

If I can't control my own body, I don't have the freedom to think at the next level.

Why not a grape pie?

Why not a grape pie challenge?

Inasmuch as our cherry growing area produced a great cherry pie to celebrate, what has happened with our grape growers?

Why not create a challenge for all the great local chefs to produce a grape pie, with a limit of 10 proof per slice so as to be able to reach the general public?

What's that smell?

Has anyone noticed the similarity of the smell from Brown Bridge and the smell from another engineering boondoggle that's been going on for years?

I think it's called incompetence. It seems to crop up with most engineering projects in the Traverse City area. If it's not outright disaster, it's large cost over-runs.

I wonder, could it be the "good old boy' network?

Not trying to cut back

I keep hearing the government is strapped for cash.

That's what I hear, but not what I see. Every time some government employees want some more perks, they always seem to find the money that supposedly isn't there.

Case in point, Club Cadillac, part of Community Mental Health, recently sent four people for an expensive "conference" in Colorado.

Two of the four were employees, of course. A lot of people in this area, and the rest of the country, can't pay rent or buy food, and they're in Colorado.

What's wrong with that picture? A lot, I'd say, a heck of a lot.

We all need to take a few minutes to write or call our elected officials in Lansing and Washington and strongly urge them to allocate less money to these groups.

They obviously aren't trying to cut back so someone needs to do it for them real soon.
