---- — Left out accomplishments

A recent letter from John McCombs critical of Barack Obama left out some of his significant accomplishments. Here’s why none of John’s phony conspiracies matter. The reality is that the things listed below are important to Americans:

The Bush recession Obama inherited in 2008 is over.

Interest rates are unbelievably low.

Virtually zero inflation.

Stock market setting records.

Retirement savings have been restored.

Forty-plus straight months of job growth in private sector.

Housing market has come back.

Wars ending.

All this while Obama was being sabotaged by obstructionists sworn to fight every move he made. We can only wonder how much he would have accomplished if Republicans had just stayed out of his way.

See the bigger picture

We live in an increasingly complex social structure driven by rapid advances in technology. When I was a child things were simpler. As I walked onto the playground at recess back then, an established social protocol limited my choices of who to play with, who to trust and who to stay away from.

In the world of today we have de-evolved backwards into technological “clans” similar to anthills or hives. The little voice inside each of us that says we are important has been squashed under the sheer enormity of options, and we fight back by finding others who think like we do.

So, we look across the barriers and see other ants, and other bees, going to and fro from their anthills and hives. We say to ourselves, “Just look at those idiots! How dare they act so foolishly!”

We need to resist the urge to be part of a hive and see the bigger picture. Each of us must assume a personal role in the larger reality of human progress. Democracy is only self-sustaining in a climate of utopian awareness amongst its citizenry. Absent that perspective we are fodder for the top 1 percent to assimilate.
