Still fired up

The state Legislature’s recent modification of fireworks laws still ignores the freedom to ‘pursuit of happiness’ of the vast majority of citizens. In the interest of providing freedom to ignite explosive devices by individuals whenever they choose, unless banned by local ordinance, the state ignores the fact that everyone else is subjected to the noise whether or not they want to be. This takes away personal freedom for peaceful enjoyment of property for the vast majority of residents. Even the limitations that can be imposed by local ordinance as in the current law show a complete lack of sensitivity and naiveté about enforcement difficulties. And with the exception of July 4th and New Year’s Day, observing what national holiday by allowing amateur fireworks will be enhanced?

And what does the state gain by the change in our laws? A piddling amount of tax dollar increase, a few low-paying and transitory jobs, and a bigger headache for all local law enforcement and officials, in addition to residents.

Plates on front and back

I read the story about the three women bicyclists getting run down and not being able to read the license plates. I feel Michigan should have the same law as Ohio and other states. License plates should be visible both front and back. I feel if that person would have had plates on the front, someone could have seen that plate.

Pursue the abusers

In reference to U.S. Rep. Benishek: Independent military prosecutors, not commanders, should pursue sexual assault cases, I agree. The same applies to sexual abuse of children by Catholic clergy.
