Change our habits

Fracking and tar sand mining are disastrous. Hundreds of millions of gallons of water are used, and that poisoned water will never be recovered. It also leads us down the path to more carbon emissions.

Unless we change our consumptive habits, within three decades the world could reach a runaway melting process of permafrost that will release methane 25 times more caustic to our atmosphere than carbon dioxide. (See “Permafrost Melting Rate Could Be Faster And Worse Than We Thought, New Study Finds” Feb. 22 Huffington Post.)

A cycle will start from which there is no turning back. Our environment will be changed with a temperature increase of over six degrees, which will dramatically alter civilization. Drought, massively destructive storms, sea levels rising, loss of tens of thousands of species in the ocean and earth, the displacement of millions of people and the crash of the world economies is imminent. This is an economic, moral, humanitarian and survival issue.

World leaders, the fuel/carbon industries, and consumers must make dramatic changes, including voting, immediately. Business can no longer pursue growth, short-term profit and blind greed; consumers cannot expect cheap and abundant fossil fuels and always wanting more things. We must recognize we’re a part of this world, and act accordingly.

Multiplying enemies

The Authorization for Use of Military Forces (AUMF) was passed by the U.S. Congress after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, to provide for U.S. “War on Terror.” It allows our U.S. government to wage war anytime, anyplace, on anyone deemed a threat to U.S. national security … with remarkably little evidence.

Hence, wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya, attacks on Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Mali and the new drone bases in Niger and Djibouti. It emboldens hawks on their warpath to Syria, Iran and North Korea.
