Would trample rights
“Free speech for me, but not for thee.” Judging from its rant against corporate speech (Sept. 13 Record-Eagle forum,) that should be Move to Amend’s motto.
What is Move to Amend, if not a corporation? And a dangerous one at that if anyone takes them seriously. They would trample our First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and association — the exact same rights they’re exercising trying to repeal them.
As for the Citizens United decision, the hyperventilation about corporate personhood is completely irrelevant. The Constitution doesn’t grant just citizens the right to free speech. The Constitution is not a limit upon citizens, it’s a limit upon government. It says that “Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech...”. What part of “Congress shall make no law” is so hard to understand?
Give Move to Amend some credit; at least they admit they want to give up our rights. But what’s wrong with the Record-Eagle editors? The Record-Eagle is a corporation that routinely practices political advocacy. Do they aspire to be the only voice? Does it not occur to them that they might be vulnerable, too?

A rational thinker
I support Tim Werner for City Commissioner. I have worked with Tim on school committees and I am impressed by his work ethic, his steadfastness and his common sense. Tim is what our city needs — a rational thinker.
Engages the public
Join me in voting for Gary Howe for City Commission. I have known Gary for 10 years and in that time seen his passion for the city mature. He has grown by listening to the public and fellow commissioners as both a planning commissioner and as a parks and recreation commissioner. We can trust Gary to shape his opinions by studying the issues and engaging the public, just as he has done with his community blog. Vote for Gary, a visionary who can take our great place and make it better.
