Prisons do it wrong

In Michigan’s prisons (according to the advocacy group Humanity for Prisoners*), inmates are struggling without basic health care, without mental health care, without adequate sanitary supplies or toilet paper, without adequate heating/cooling, without adequate sewage disposal due to overcrowding, abusive treatment by guards and no preparation for release.

In an animal shelter near you each animal receives care from a veterinarian, medications and surgery when needed, clean cages, fresh litter, adequate heating/cooling, love and attention and people dedicated to finding them a forever home.

If the greatness of a state is measured by the way it cares for its weakest citizens, something is terribly wrong with this picture.

The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) is under the Executive Branch of government headed by the governor. So please let Gov. Snyder know your concerns as the 2014 election season gets underway. His phone is (517) 335-7858; his fax is (517) 335-6863; his snail mail is PO Box 30013, Lansing, MI 48909; and his email is

Support students

As a senior citizen and grandmother I totally agree with Doug Stanton’s Sept. 17 forum.

We need to make sure our students have the teachers, facilities and technology necessary for them to learn in today’s world. The generation before us made sure we had the materials with which to learn and be successful as adults. It is our job to support the students of today by making sure they have access to a quality education that will prepare them to compete in a global environment.

Please vote “yes” for the Traverse City Area Public Schools bond proposals.

Won’t vote GOP

I have always considered myself moderate. In over 50 years of voting, I have always chosen the best candidate, regardless of party. After the way the GOP has handled Washington the past few years, and now with the shutdown, it wouldn’t matter what candidate they put before me in the future. I will never vote for a Republican again for any office.
