Teaching water safety

I’m concerned with the number of water accidents occurring around Traverse City. I grew up on the water there and while adventures have taken me away, I love the area.

Living in the Seattle area I worked for the Renton School District in a water safety program offered to all fourth-graders. Research suggested that to be the best age for the program. Each fourth grade was offered one week of swimming lessons, traveling by school bus to the high school pool. The children were placed in classes according to their skill.

Each class received basic water safety instruction. I demonstrated falling out of a canoe, falling in the water with clothes on and how to summon help for a friend without placing yourself in danger, every week for years. I would be happy to research funding and other specific details for this program for you. It no longer exists.

He made a difference

In 1994 I met Bryan Crough as an architecture student. After a short discussion regarding his work at the Downtown Development Authority he invited me to attend their meetings. With enthusiasm I accepted his invitation and spent the summer learning about the changes taking place and what the future held for my hometown’s downtown.

At that time meetings were held in a nearly derelict Opera House in bad need of some TLC. Bryan used this site as a metaphor for what downtown was and should return to. This location was the foundation for what I have recently seen as an amazing commercial core that is active all year.

I am sad to read about his passing but I am glad to see his vision fruit its rewards. Visiting TC is more enjoyable for me knowing he made this difference.
