Stop fracking now

Nearly four years ago the Supreme Court, in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, ruled that corporations are persons with Constitutional rights.

Whatever you think of this decision, it’s the law of the land.

Similarly, whatever you think of hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” the process remains legal in Michigan.

Now here’s where it gets interesting: as a person, it’s illegal for me to withdrawal millions of gallons of water, pollute it with thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals and release it untreated into the environment. How can it still be legal for other “persons” to do so?

It would seem certain “persons” enjoy special rights that I do not. Allowing them to pollute air, water and soil while “we the people” remain disenfranchised from equal protections from the effects of such seems both duplicitous and discriminatory.

Now that corporations are persons, afforded the same rights as “we,” it would seem reasonable that they be subject to the same responsibilities and environmental constraints as well.

Since the Supreme Court has made “corporate personhood” the law, we need to work together as a community to ensure the law of the land applies equally to all persons.

Stop Fracking now!

Disregard for women

I was appalled to see that Michigan legislators will be considering a bill that would not allow health insurance policies in Michigan to cover an abortion in even cases of incest or rape.

Really? Are we now going back to the mistaken thinking that the rape victim must have “asked for it” and therefore it is justified to saddle a young female victim with the cost of rectifying an unwanted pregnancy or (because she lacks the funds for an abortion) pressing her into carrying a pregnancy to term?

This bill shows a total disregard for both the physical and mental well-being of the young women of our state. I urge everyone who reads this to contact both your Michigan representative and your Michigan senator.
