Intriguing headline

For some time I have intended to express my appreciation to the Record-Eagle for publishing columns by Lovina Eicher about the rigors and rewards of her Amish life. The headline on her most recent column, “Day of baptisms ends at hospital” was, by far, the most intriguing headline in the paper.

After baptismal services, attended by 350 Old Order Amish, she relates that her daughter, Verena, had a choking attack, which resulted in an ambulance trip to the hospital. Regular readers of Lovina’s column know that Verena has ongoing health problems.

I join Lovina in counting it as God’s blessing that Verena recovered. Nothing else in the paper — least of all political columnist George Will’s fuddy-duddy musing over the future of his ailing Republican party - came close to prompting a similarly compassionate reaction.

A clever fellow

Mr. Nemetz, a local liquor store manager, takes issue in the “Forum” with any attempt to reduce the number of Open Space festivals. He is interested in the money these festivals bring to business owners … and they certainly do that.

They also bring considerable annoyance to everyone else, not the least of which is $10-a-day parking, high-decibel concerts and noisy air shows that have children waking up screaming and leave adults sleepless.

Mr. Nemetz seems well aware of these inconveniences. He says, “I lived downtown myself. I say deal with it.” He did deal with it, too — he moved to Lake Ann. I doubt that the festival noises bother him there at all and of course he can avoid Traverse City’s taxes. What a clever fellow.
