Carry it on

When I was a kid in the ‘50s watching Westerns on TV, I always used to root for the Indians. Now that I’m older I’m convinced I was right.

The story about the demise of hardwoods due to disease was told from a point of view that sees the problem strictly in terms of dollars, through the eyes of boosters worried that fewer people might take golf outings and such if the color palette were a little off, not a word about the effects on the ecosystem as a whole, just dread that the flow of dollars would be stemmed.

Not to worry. Though loons wash up dead by the thousands amid the algae scum along our beaches, the Pure Michigan myth can still be sold and we can all feel superior that our region has once again landed on somebody’s “best” list.I know plant diseases aren’t directly caused by the greed that infects our culture, but the attitude that sees nature only in terms of selfish gain impedes the efforts of heroes who strive to live in and with nature rather than capitalize upon it.

To those heroes, carry it on. We’re winning.

A health and safety issue

I am referring to a serious health and safety issue that has been ongoing for way too long. I am referring to a partially torn down mobile home on Sawyer Road just a block south of Blair Elementary School. It appears that somebody decided to harvest the valuable parts for recycling and then walked away from the project, leaving a very dangerous structure. I have driven past and have seen children playing in and around this structure. Does somebody have to get seriously hurt before the township officials will step in and make something happen?
