Levels the playing field
I am writing in response to the July 12 editorial regarding the crowded ballot. In particular I would like to address the Protect our Jobs initiative.
You wrongly stated that the initiative would 'affect collective bargaining agreements between public sector unions and their employers.' It does not just protect public sector unions. In fact it protects collective bargaining for public or private employers regarding wages, hours, workplace safety standards and benefits.
Furthermore, it establishes the rights to organize, form, join or assist unions. This initiative protects a basic right for all families.
All Michigan workers and their families benefit from collective bargaining. It protects the wages, pension and benefits of all people.
The substance of collectively bargained contracts become the industry standard for all workers.
Collective bargaining levels the playing field. Workers need protections from corporate special interests that arbitrarily cut wages, benefits and pensions and ship jobs overseas just to squeeze out more profits for themselves. CEOs are making millions; last year most saw double-digit increases, while those actually doing the work have seen wage reversals and stagnation.
Collective bargaining helps level the playing field for employees so CEOs aren't the only ones benefiting from a company's success.
