TCAPS’ addiction

“A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.” — George Bernard Shaw

Paul is the district’s lawyer.

Traverse City Area Pubic Schools has an addiction — their insatiable need to consult their lawyer. In Mr. Cousins’ letter, a sidebar to the March 5 article, “Time to pay,” Mr. Cousins stated, “TCAPS officials, the Board of Education and I are currently reviewing the agreement and will consult with our attorney to determine how to proceed.”

In the next paragraph Mr. Cousins reported, TCAPS was putting measures in place to prevent a “stumble” like this in the future, “including ensuring that our attorney reviews bond information materials before they are shared with the public.”

Having had a leadership role in a State House campaign during the 2012 primary and general election cycle, I found the only office I needed to consult was that of the county clerk. Rather than spending $235 per hour to ferret out problems with his campaign literature, Mr. Cousins need only cross the street with a prototype of his campaign flyer. The county clerk would be happy to tell him how to modify it to pass legal muster — for no charge.
