Things not mentioned

In their Jan. 5 forum piece promoting deep-well fracking, Peters and Simaz neglect to mention several important details. Previous fracking practices used 50,000 gallons of fresh water per well (vertical fracking). Current horizontal fracking uses one to 10 million gallons of water per well, permanently poisoned by chemicals utilized to break up the shale, which can never be used for consumption or farming again. They pump it down a hole claiming it will not harm present or future generations.

With cheaper natural gas, why move to clean renewable energy? Natural gas is cheaper because gas/oil corporations do not pay for the water, methane gas released into the atmosphere, government subsidies, or potential risks to future generations. If they did, oil/gas would be competitive with solar/wind energy.

They claim thousands of new jobs are created with fracking. However, building a new electrical grid and developing the solar/wind industry can also create thousands of new jobs.

Alternative clean energy is essential to our future, without it and the continued use of fossil fuels (natural gas, coal, tar-sand, oil), global warming will escalate.

Finally, both authors earn a living in oil/gas, making their opinions self-serving.
