Safety is at stake

Could those who demanded our Lord leave our schools please, please invite him back? Almost weekly we find proof in the headlines that things aren’t going so well since he left. As he is the consummate gentleman who will never force himself upon us, he stands waiting for the invitation to return. Please extend it. Our children’s safety and very lives are at stake.

An excellent job

As a Bay Area Transportation Authority bus driver I want to thank the Grand Traverse County Road Commission for the excellent job they are doing in plowing and sanding the roads in this extremely difficult winter. Keep up the good work.

Give 4th its own day

Expanding the 2014 National Cherry Festival by one day to include the Fourth of July is wrong. Celebrating our country’s independence should be a separate occasion, as should the NCF. Move the Cherry Festival ahead one week when our own cherries would be more readily available, and let our national day of independence be celebrated as it was meant to be.

The tourists will still come to Traverse City. Two celebrations will draw more tourists, many of whom will stay for the Cherry Festival. Festivities for the Fourth could be a veteran’s parade, fireworks and craft shows. Water sports and boat shows could be included as well as patriotic music shows.

Utilize the City Opera House for the Traverse City Symphony Orchestra for their annual music performance, which promotes the Fourth of July. Wuerfel Park has a veterans’ celebration before the Beach Bums game on the Fourth.

Let the NCF be its own celebration and stop trying to expand the Cherry Festival beyond the length of eight days. Sometimes even eight days seems too long.
