No guns on campus
I have voiced my opposition to legislation allowing concealed weapons on college campuses to state Sen. Michelle McManus and Rep. Wayne Schmidt. Having spent 25 years working with students on a college campus, ages approximately 17-23, the idea of opening the door to having concealed weapons in their environment is appalling.
Students, faculty and staff do not want concealed weapons in their collegiate environment, including cars on campus. MCL 25.425(o), the law passed by the Legislature, prohibits persons licensed by the state from carrying concealed weapons in certain locations, namely dormitories, classrooms, sports arenas, large entertainment facilities, bars and hospitals.
Why is there legislation by Sen. Michelle McManus pending to repeal MCL 25.425(o)? "The Michigan Constitution places responsibility for the state universities in elected boards of regents or trustees." Is it constitutional for the Legislature to overturn ordinances the regents or trustees have already adopted to ban concealed weapons from our campuses?
I sincerely hope that this issue is examined carefully, putting the well-being and safety of the college community first.
