Letters to the Editor: 04/25/2008

In response to Joe Terrell's letter about reducing trips to save gas, with all due respect, he is retired and has more options. I live in Rapid City and work two jobs, both in Traverse City. I have two teenagers involved in school activities. My husband's job involves working in different locations and may involve extra trips for meetings, picking up parts and prints. Our gas budget is insane, just to do what has to be done.

We used to visit family regularly downstate or travel to the Upper Peninsula on weekends. Now we don't do either, and we have indefinitely postponed taking a vacation. Many of us have limited our travels as much as possible, and are doing all we can possibly do out of sheer necessity.

Kingsley students chip in

Recently Kingsley Jazz bands performed their annual April in Paris concert to benefit Kingsley Public Library's building program. Student artists sold their work in a silent auction to help raise funds. Other students sang and danced to a musical review of "Grease."

The Kingsley community appreciated this superb event. These students are responsible for a large donation, more than $1,400, made to our new library. Over the years, students' community service in April in Paris has resulted in a gift of more than $6,000 for the library building.

Students and their teachers are to be commended for their dedication to excellence, their hard work and for helping their community build a new facility. The library will be something of significant worth for the south Grand Traverse region.

Welcome deserved

The city commission's warm welcome for Ralph Soffredine at the April 21 meeting was greatly appreciated.

Although not nearly as important as the various mayoral proclamations, Commissioner Soffredine's return is appreciated by those who are thankful for his service to Traverse City.

His experience, hard work and integrity are appreciated by many area residents.
