By Michael Walton

— TRAVERSE CITY -- Health officials diagnosed a local student with Nisseria meningitis, a bacterium that can cause bacterial meningitis.

The student attends the Career Tech Center in Traverse City. The student has been hospitalized and has not attended class at the center since Nov. 14, Traverse City Area Intermediate School District authorities said.

Custodians have disinfected all areas of the center that could have been exposed to the pathogen.

Neisseria meningitis bacteria is spread through close contact with the respiratory droplets of infected individuals.
