Platte River flooding threat subsides

HONOR — Benzie County authorities used an airboat to break up ice on the Platte River to alleviate concerns about flooding, officials said.

On Thursday, the river was 3.6 feet above normal at Indian Hills Road in the Honor area, said Benzie County Emergency Management Coordinator Frank Post. Officials with the Benzie County Sheriff’s Department, Homestead Township Fire and others used a county-owned airboat Thursday to break up an ice jam, and the river started dropping.

"They use the weight of the boat," Post said. "It travels over the ice and the momentum breaks the ice up."

Post said the ice jam held the potential to cause flooding to 24 residences upstream. Half of those homes are year-round residences.
