Collective fitness earns team thousands

TRAVERSE CITY —A Grand Traverse County fitness team won a $9,000 grant by logging more than 38,000 miles of physical activity in an eight-week competition.

Roughly 250 community members joined Team Grand Traverse, and their collective 38,000 miles were good enough to tie with Team Marquette for first place in Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s MI Big Green Gym Competition.

Blue Cross officials will present the grant during a county commission meeting tonight. Grant funds will go toward improvements at the Civic Center’s Kids’ Kove playground.

County Parks and Recreation Director Jason Jones said he has spoken with Marquette County officials about a possible rematch next year.

“I would say there is a very friendly rivalry going,” Jones said.
