Peace Day events Saturday

TRAVERSE CITY —Tim Keenan knows what war is like.

Keenan is a Vietnam combat veteran and president of the Veterans for Peace Chapter 50, and has worked the past two years with his chapter's national organization to promote peace with an all-day celebration of the International Day of Peace.

The second rendition of the annual event begins Saturday at 8 a.m. with a sunrise greeting at Clinch Park.

"I know what war does to people," said Keenan, who came home from war suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. "You never get away. It's always there. You just learn to manage it."

Keenan contends it would be difficult to find a combat veteran like him who likes war.

The ranks of the local Veterans for Peach chapter swelled to about 70 members during the past few years, Keenan said.

It is a group focused on spreading peace while continuing to support solders and their families. Saturday's all-day celebration will feature several events, including planting a peace pole, a potluck and talks led by both clergy and laity.

One day, Keenan hopes the International Day of Peace will be observed by worldwide cease fires, but for now he's content to push for peace on a local level.

"All we do is talk about peace all day," Keenan said.

The events run Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, go to www.vfp50.org.
