GREILICKVILLE — A 10-month-old baby in Leelanau County is suspected to have died from sudden infant death syndrome.
Undersheriff Steve Morgan said a day care worker reported the infant boy was not breathing Monday at 11:49 a.m. He said the baby was still in a car seat inside an Elmwood Township home in the 3400 block of Partridge Run.
"The day care operator took the child into town," Morgan said. "The child was sleeping and left in the car seat."
Morgan said the day care worker didn't want to awaken the child and left him in the car seat inside a closed room. The worker later to find the baby wasn't breathing. Attempts to revive the infant at the home weren't successful.
Morgan said nothing suspicious was found in the autopsy. Investigators ruled out accidental asphyxiation after a reconstruction of how the baby was sitting in the car seat.
"The preliminary ruling is it's a SIDS-type death pending the final disposition when toxicology come in," he said.
