TRAVERSE CITY — Local farmers say the peach harvest should peak during the coming weekend, prompting bakers, home chefs and canning enthusiasts to head to the orchards.
The crop is a little behind last year's fruit, but there should be plenty of peaches available for either we-pick or you-pick buyers from now until the middle of September, said Steve Fouch, owner of Jacob's Corn Maze and Farm.
Fruit enthusiasts like Beryl Striewski have their favorite peach recipes at the ready to turn the yellow flesh of the fruit into butters, jams and pie fillings.
Gene Peyerk, chef-owner at Leelanau Pie and Pastry in Lake Leelanau, said the fruit coming into season will trigger a surge in the number of people asking for his peach pies. While he usually produces about 1,000 fruit-filled pies each week during the summer season, the percentage of those pies that are peach filled will surge in the coming weeks.
