Police: Man assaulted babysitting relative

Traverse City Record-Eagle

---- — TRAVERSE CITY — A Traverse city man is accused of sexually assaulting a young female relative after he brought her to his apartment to babysit his children, authorities said.

Johnathon Caleb Edmonds, 21, was arraigned Friday on two felony charges of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Bob Cooney said the charges are based on the age of the victim and her blood relationship to Edmonds.

The alleged incident occurred Aug. 12 when Edmonds brought a 14-year-old relative to his Fitzhugh Drive apartment in order to babysit his children. Police reports state Edmonds began wrestling with the teen and carried her to his roommate’s bedroom where he touched her sexually for about 15 minutes and bit her chest.

The victim told police “she was screaming at him to stop and he would not,” the report states.

The assault stopped after Edmonds’ roommate entered the room. Authorities said a second assault occurred later that day after Edmonds carried her into a “babies room” and tried to pull down her pants, according to the police report. The victim told her mother about the incidents, who called police.

Court documents state Edmonds left a bruise where he bit the victim on the chest. He claimed he “accidentally” bit her, according to the documents, but admitted he did touch the girl while “wrestling.”

Second-degree criminal sexual conduct carries a maximum 15-year penalty and would require Edmonds to register as a Tier 2 sex offender if convicted. A preliminary exam is scheduled for Aug. 30 at 11 a.m.
