TRAVERSE CITY — An unfortunately placed bird nest may be the cause of East Bay Township house fire that displaced a family of four.
Three Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department trucks responded to the fire report Tuesday at 12:25 a.m. Fire was coming through the roof of the 351 George Street home when firefighters arrived.
The family quickly exited the home with their cat when they smelled smoke.
Assistant Chief Terry Flynn said investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire, but early indications seem to point above the front door.
"It started at the front of the house," he said. "They had a bird's nest in a light fixture above the entry door. The origin is pointing right there."
Firefighters had the fire under control in less than 30 minutes. A Traverse City Fire Department trucked assisted in suppressing the blaze.
Flynn said most of the fire and damage was in the attic above the ceiling. The Northwest Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross has taken the family under its care.
