Northport man who stole donation jar surrenders

SUTTONS BAY — A Northport man who stole a donation jar for a local cancer victim surrendered to authorities, and now faces a fresh felony charge.

Benny Lopez Jr., 23, turned himself in on Saturday, Leelanau County Undersheriff Steve Morgan said. He was wanted on a felony count of larceny in a building for the recent theft of a money jar from Deep's Corner Store in Northport.

The jar contained donations for Jeff Peplinski, a Suttons Bay man stricken with cancer.

Chief Assistant Leelenau County Prosecutor Doug Donaldson on Wednesday authorized a separate felony charge of breaking and entering a building with intent to commit larceny. That charge is tied to an unrelated break-in of a Northport shop.
