Elk Rapids students to plant thousands of trees

ELK RAPIDS — Elk Rapids Schools’ advanced placement biology students will plant more than 700 trees today on forested property owned by the school district.

This is phase one of a project that includes planting another 5,000 trees by October.

Elk Rapids Schools owns approximately 40 acres of forest area off Moore Road, just south of M-72. Last spring’s ice and snow storm significantly damaged the forest, which has a rich, educational history dating back to 1938.

In the early 1940s, students at Elk Rapids Schools, formerly the Williamsburg Consolidated Schools, planted many of the trees that now make up the forest. Under the direction of forestry experts, lumbering on the property periodically takes place and generates revenue for Elk Rapids Schools.

Students will be work in conjunction with Glen Beyers, a retired state Department of Natural Resources forester. They also have the support of Christine Crissman of the Grand Traverse Conservation District, which provided the trees at cost to Elk Rapids Schools.

Students will plant trees from about 8:30 a.m. until noon.

For more information, please call biology teacher Amy Muzzarelli at 264-8108 or High School Principal Mike Travis at 264-8108.
