Authorities: woman stole from vulnerable Charlevoix County man

Woman accused of embezzlement

CHARLEVOIX — State police arrested an Ellsworth woman on accusations she embezzled more than $20,000 from an elderly man.

The woman, 37, awaits arraignment in 90th District Court after she bonded out of Charlevoix County’s jail on Jan. 9.

The investigation began in 2012 when the woman worked as an independent home aid worker for the victim, an elderly Hayes Township man. Authorities discovered the woman, who was in charge of the man’s finances, had written 48 checks totaling $24,000 in her name over a year’s time.

The suspect also said she had a license with the state, but never produced such a qualification.
