NMC to offer a bachelor's degree this fall

TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College plans to offer a bachelor of science degree in maritime studies this fall, making it among the first community colleges in the state to offer a four-year degree.

“It’s a huge deal,” said Marguerite Cotto, NMC’s vice president of lifelong and professional learning.

“This action will allow us, in these very select technical areas, to provide a degree at the level of education we’ve already been able to give students. It’s amazing to credential at the level we already train. We are just proud to be on the leading edge of this one.”

The NMC board this week agreed to authorize the degree. The college initially will offer maritime deck officer and maritime engineering officer majors starting in the 2013-2014 academic year.

Last December, the Michigan Legislature approved a bill that authorized the state’s community colleges to offer bachelor’s degrees in maritime technology, cement technology, energy production technology and culinary arts.

Gov. Rick Snyder signed the bill into law on December 27, 2012.
