---- — GLEN ARBOR — An 8-year-old Ann Arbor boy is dead after a canoe overturned in chilly Lake Michigan waters during a return trip from North Manitou Island.
Leelanau County Undersheriff Steve Morgan said the child was canoeing with his 48-year-old father Monday. Their trip started from D.H. Day Campground and went several miles to North Manitou Island. They spent about an hour on the island and were returning to the mainland when their canoe overturned about a half-mile from the shore near Sleeping Bear Point.
The father used a cell phone to contact campground officials at about 8:20 p.m. The Leelanau County Sheriff's Department, Glen Arbor Fire Department and the United States Coast Guard responded.
The father and son wore life jackets, but suffered from hypothermia from the 55-degree water. The child was airlifted to Munson Medical Center for treatment and later pronounced dead from hypothermia.
The father, who is also from Ann Arbor, was transported to the hospital by ambulance.
