Embezzler says he sorry for crimes

TRAVERSE CITY — A Grawn man who admitted he stole electronics from an employer said he’s sorry.

Kevin Winans, 19, faces a possible five-year prison sentence, despite his remorse. Grand Traverse County prosecutors charged him with a felony count of embezzlement, more than $1,000 and less than $20,000, after he took two laptop computers and three tablet devices from the Office Depot located in Garfield Township, court records state.

Winans told the Record-Eagle he’s sorry for committing the thefts.

“I was just doing it for feeling empty, I guess; wanting something more than I had,” Winans said. “It was just stupid.”

A store security employee began investigating missing inventory at the Office Depot in November. The security employee first crossed-checked the missing inventory records with store work schedules, according to a police reports

The security employee then set up a fake email account to check for the missing items on Craigslist. He found a Craiglist vendor selling items that matched those missing from the store. The vendor listed the same phone number on Craigslist that Winans, who started working at the Office Depot a few months earlier, used on his employment application, the report states.

Winans later admitted to stealing the electronics, valued at about $1,600, when confronted by the security employee and a store manager, police records show. Winans sold one of the laptops and one of the tablets. He returned the rest of the merchandise, valued at about $1,000, to Office Depot.

“I feel really bad for the whole thing,” Winans said. “I just want this to be over.”

An Office Depot manager did not return a call for comment.

A warrant for Winans arrest was outstanding as of early Monday afternoon.
