Suspect in 1996 murder pleaded not guilty

TRAVERSE CITY — The new suspect in an old Kalkaska case pleaded not guilty to murder and sexual assault charges.

Jason Anthony Ryan, 35, of Davison, was arrested and charged with the murder and sexual assault of Kalkaska resident Geraldine Montgomery, 68. Montgomery was found dead in her trunk in 1996.

Ryan was free for 17 years before DNA found at the scene of the crime was retested and matched his. He was charged in December.

Ryan entered his not guilty plea on a waiver of arraignment, said Diane Doyle, the Kalkaska deputy clerk. His arraignment at the 46th Circuit Court had been scheduled for April 1.
