— TRAVERSE CITY - The Traverse City area is expected to receive five to 10 inches of snow through Friday afternoon, and other areas could see even more.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory through midnight tonight. A lake effect snow warning is also in place through Friday afternoon.

National Weather Meteorologist Nick Schwartz said the heavy snow forecast comes after some very abnormal weather for the region, including a record-high temperature of 51 degrees on Tuesday and rainfall through this morning of nearly three-quarters of an inch.

"It is highly unusual to have that amount of rain this time in January, which is supposed to be our coldest time of the year," Schwartz said.

Schwartz said the Manistee River is being monitored closely for possible flooding, but no flood watch or warning is in place.
